Introduction
Good day kids! Welcome to Module 3.
This module is made for you to become an independent person who is
capable of doing a task. It helps to improve your reading skills as one of the
functional tools for learning. It is a learner-friendly module because the
exercises are patterned with the skills intended for you to understand and use
in your daily living.
The module is divided into 2 lessons, namely:
• Lesson 1 – Using Compound Sentences to Show Cause-Effect
• Lesson 2 – Using Complex Sentences to Show Cause-Effect

Directions. Read each sentence. Write C if the underlined clause is a Cause,
and E if is an Effect. Write the answer on your answer sheet.

Read the text and answer the following questions.
My father is a quiet person and a pet lover. On weekends, he stays at home
or visits some pet shops. My brother wants pets too, so he always feeds the
chicken in his farm. Father noticed this, so he started a small poultry business.

Noticed that in the paragraph, there are italicized words. What do you
call these words?
Words that join other words, phrases or clauses in a sentence are called
conjunctions.
A compound sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses
connected by the coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) for, and, nor, but, or,
yet and so. Sometimes a semicolon (;) is used as a conjunction to replace and.
Cause-and-effect relationship describes what happens and explains
why it happens.
The cause tells us why it happens. The effect tells us what happens.
Compound sentences show cause and effect relationship.

A cause-effect relationship describes what happens and why it happens.
Cause is the reason why a thing happens.
Effect is the result of something.
A complex sentence is a sentence that contains independent clause and
dependent clause. The dependent clause begins with a subordinating
conjunction such as after, before, because, although, when, since, if,
whenever, unless, while, so that, even though.
Example:
He chased the mouse because he wanted to catch it.
(independent clause) (conjunction) (dependent clause)
