1.) Who are the net senders of labor in the ASEAN region? Why is that so?
- the major senders of labor in the ASEAN region are Vietnam, Cambodia,
Indonesia, and Philippines. There are many reasons why citizens of these
countries tend to choose working overseas rather in there home land. And one of
these many reasons is , lacks on providing opportunities and jobs for the people
, and the low wage rate for every job. They believe that if they work overseas
their life will be easier and good. Another reason is wars, because the ASEAN
regions are prone to wars, especially in the old times. Citizens are more likely to
leave their home land and find peace at other countries.
2.) What are the occupations of these labour migrants? What are the possible
factors for these statistics?
-Migrants from the Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh plays
a vital role in agriculture, livestock, seafood, and manufacturing. Migrants from
these countries have great skills in farming and agriculture because they are an
agrarian countries so they have great knowledge to these matters. There are
three levels of occupancy that the International Standard Classification of
Occupancies (ISCO) identifies, the high level which includes managers,
professionals, assistant professionals and technicians; medium levels are those
employed as clerks, sales and skilled agricultural laborers; and low level with
elementary positions. However, there is a portion of the labor force, the
undocumented laborers, that this fails to account due to lack of data on cases of
human trafficking an forced labor.
3.) What induced the OFW culture in the Philippines? What does bagong bayani
mean?
-It is started when the Philippines is colonized by the American government,
Filipinos are took and used as workers in every part of America as farmers, fruit
pickers, engineers, and soldiers. This Incident last for a very long period of time,
until America set quotas. Filipinos find it very hard to enter in America, so they
go to Europe and some countries in middle East. And another is, due to the high

unemployment rate in the Philippines, many Filipinos also opt to work abroad as
OFWs to provide a better life for their families. While there are job openings here
and there, most Filipinos have difficulty landing a regular job that provides
financially rewarding pay. So I think that is one of the reasons why OFW culture
induced in the Philippines. Bagong bayani is a term used for OFW's they
contribute to the economic growth of our country through their remittances and
most importantly, there personal sacrifice to give their family a comfortable life
despite fighting homesickness.
4.) Why are OFWs integral to the Philippine Economy?
- OFW's contribute to economic progress of the Philippines. Remittances that
OFW's send here are used by their families here in the Philippines. The balik-
bayan boxes, chocolates, shirts, and other souvenirs are one of the examples
that our OFW's contribute to our economy. These remittances have contributed
to the strengthening of the nation's balance of payments position, sustaining the
surpluses on current accounts. Even though it is a personal sacrifice to leave
behind families and loved ones to go abroad and seek employment with higher
wages. The remittances sent by the foreign workers are not only contributing at
the macroscopic level of the national economy of the Philippines but also at the
microscopic level of household finances.
5.) What are the issues experienced by OFWs?
-One of the common issues that our OFW's experience is homesickness,
rebellious children, cheating spouses, and maltreatment. Filipinos are so tight-
knit, that’s why its very hard for them to leave and miss all the important event
in their family like birthdays and graduation. So, in return they will try the best
they can to provide the needs of their family they left here. In some cases,
because OFWs are far from their family, their partners cheated on them and
their children become rebellious because they lack on providing the love and
care their children wants. Another issue is maltreatment, Based on data from the
Statista Research Department, almost 5,000 cases of maltreatment of OFWs
were reported in 2020. The majority of the cases were from the Middle East.
That same year, the Philippines sent 560,000 OFWs to the region.
6.) What is your opinion about Labour Migration (OFW culture) in the Philippines?

-I can’t blame people why they want to migrate and work or settle in other
countries because Philippines is very chaotic, doesn’t provide enough
opportunities and jobs, lacks on support to talents and skills of it citizens, and
most of all corrupt. So, many Filipinos study in other countries to seek
knowledge and jobs that they can’t find here. In fact, if I given a chance, I want
to go overseas to find a sustainable job and settle in the country I choose
because it’s too depressing and uncomfortable here. I think if our government
change and focus more on providing opportunity and services to people. Citizens
wouldn’t migrate to seek jobs and services in other countries.
