SECTION B
QUESTION 2
A block of mass M, resting on a rough horizontal table, is connected by a light, inextensible
string, passing over a frictionless pulley, to another block with a mass of 260 g. the 260 g
block hangs vertically as shown in the diagram below.
A force of 60 N is applied to the stationary block on the table at an angle of 10° to the
horizontal. It causes this block to accelerate at 2,89 m·s -2 to the left. The coefficient of
kinetic friction between the block and the surface of the table is 0,3. Ignore the effects of air
friction.
2.1 Define the term normal force in words. (2)
2.2 Calculate the:
2.2.1 Tension in the string (3)
2.2.2 Mass M (5)

QUESTION 3
Two metal ball A and B are rolling along horizontal straight line towards each other in a
closed system as shown in the diagram below. Ball A with a mass of 0,75 kg is rolling at a
velocity of 4 m.s-1. Ball B with a mass of 1,25 kg collides head on with ball A at a velocity of
3 m.s-1. After the collision ball A rolls in the direction opposite to its initial direction at a
velocity of 2,5 m.s-1.
3.1 State the principle of conservation of linear momentum in words. (2)
3.2 Calculate velocity of ball B after collision. (5)
3.3 State Newton’s second law in terms of momentum. (2)
3.4 Calculate the average force that ball A and B exert on each other during the
collision if the two balls are in contact for 0,2 s. (3)
3.5 Define the term inelastic collision (2)
3.6 Is the collision elastic or inelastic? Use calculations to support your answer. (5)

QUESTION 4
4.1 A ball is thrown vertically upwards, from a balcony of a tall building, with a velocity of
12 m.s-1. On its way up, the ball passes a window which has a height of 1 m. the
balcony is 4 m above the ground. The velocity of the ball at the bottom of the window
is 8,1 m.s-1. Ignore the effects of air friction.
4.1.1 Define the term free fall. (2)
4.1.2 Define the term projectile (2)
4.1.3 Calculate the time taken for the ball to reach its maximum height. (3)
4.1.4 Calculate maximum height reached by the ball. (3)
4.1.5 Calculate time taken to reach the top of the window. (4)
4.1.6 Draw a velocity time graph for the motion of the ball from the moment
that the ball is thrown upwards until it comes back to the position it was
thrown from. Use the point from which the ball was thrown as reference.
Clearly indicate the following on your graph:
The velocity with which the ball is thrown upwards.
The time taken by the ball to reach its maximum height.
The velocity with which the ball arrives on the ground. (3)
