Please describe the plan of action for today’s field visit. (Date and time, Objectives, Goals,
Purpose of your visit)
On February 11th , we revisited Kariachery, a neighbouring village on our second Karma-Yoga
field visit. The three-hour trip included an engaging encounter with the women of the Self Help
Group. The core objective of this visit was to build connections with these women and glean
valuable knowledge about the nature of their business endeavours.
Please describe the activities done to complete the action plan. (Work done in the field).
We as a team engaged in a conversation with Mrs. Indrani, the president of the Self-Help Group
(SHG). The discussion centered around the group's business operations, particularly its
embroidery unit managed by 10 dedicated members from the same village. Following a
detailed exchange regarding the SHG's challenges, we gathered as a group at a common spot
and collectively brainstormed potential avenues to offer assistance.
What did you observe today and would like to implement in your next field visit? (Next
level of action)
The second visit to Kariachery proved very insightful as it revealed several challenges faced
by the Self-Help Group (SHG). Mrs. Indrani highlighted their dependence on sporadic orders
during festivals, as villagers rarely purchase embroidered items outside these periods. This
creates a financial hurdle, limiting their ability to buy materials in advance for showcasing
finished products. The lack of frequent orders further exacerbates the fund shortage, hindering
their ambition to create and sell ready-made garments.
Recognizing the women's tailoring skills, we as a group planned to explore potential solutions
during our next visit and also discuss the same with the Village surpanch. The focus will be on
finding ways to secure orders for cotton handbags with embroidery. This strategy aims to
expand their business, generate income, and ultimately create a sustainable environment for
their business to flourish.
What is the learning outcome from this field visit? (Lessons learned.)
During our visit, we noticed great positivity and happiness by Mrs. Indrani and her team, even
though they didn't have any customer orders. They showcased a "never give up" attitude and
were very ambitious. Our team members also came up with ideas on how we could raise funds
and help their business. Coming face to face with the struggles of local rural small villages
made us realise how we being MBA students and from a prosperous background must stand
beside them and give them our valuable ideas. Our support makes the community stronger both
financially and socially.
