Humility
Definition
Humility is the acknowledgment of our limitations and the recognition that all good things come from
God. It is the foundation of spiritual growth and a vital Christian virtue.
Theological Reflection
In Orthodox Christianity, humility is regarded as the key to achieving true communion with God. St.
Isaac the Syrian states that humility is 'the raiment of the Godhead.' It allows us to recognize our
need for God's mercy and grace.
Biblical References
Philippians 2:3-5 - 'Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more
significant than yourselves. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.'
Practical Application
One way to practice humility is by regularly examining our thoughts and actions, asking ourselves if
we are putting others first or seeking recognition. Serving others quietly, without expecting praise, is
a tangible way to grow in humility.
