My Mother Dies
1- When did David’s mom die?
Two months after David joined the school.
2- How was the weather like when Mr. Creakle asked to see David?
It was bitterly cold. The boys shivered from the cold and their hands turned blue.
3- What occasion was it when Mr. Creakle told David about his mother’s death?
It was David’s birthday, he was in the classroom and all the boys gathered around him to
wish him a happy birthday.

He thought that Peggotty sent him a birthday present.

He felt that there was something wrong.

She told him that his mom was ill for a long time, things got worse after the baby was born
she was sometimes unhappy and forgetful. The Murdestones often spoke to her crossly
and made her sad although she loved them.

She asked Peggotty for some water, she gave Peggotty a patient smile, she put her head on
Peggotty ’s arm and died like an innocent child going to sleep.

They asked her to leave as they didn’t want her as their servant anymore. So Peggotty was
going to her brother in Yarmouth until she decided what work she was going to do next.

She asked them to take David with her for a holiday in Yarmouth. David was surprised
when they agreed.

They travelled in Mr. Barkis’ cart who was so happy during the journey to Yarmouth and
asked Peggotty and David many times if they were comfortable or not, Peggotty and David
kept telling him the same answer that they were comfortable.

She was taller, prettier and she didn’t want to play with David or spend her time with him,
she also refused to sit next ho him. David was disappointed because he considered her the
most beautiful girl he had ever seen, he also thought he was in love with her.

They all listened in interest to these stories about David and his friends, Emily listened
eagerly especially when David told them about James Steerforth. David noticed that her
eyes shining and a smile on her lips. She blushed and hid her face when she saw them
looking at her, she wanted to see Mr. Steerforth.
19- How was Peggotty kind to David after her marriage to Mr. Barkis?
She kept a room in her little house for David to come and stay in at any time he wanted.
20- What did The Murdestones decide about David’s education in Salem House?
When David returned home from Yarmouth, they weren’t pleased to see him, and tried to
get rid of him, they considered school too expensive so they arranged for David to start
work although he was only ten so he was sent to London to work in a warehouse.
21- What was David’s work in the warehouse in London?
It was washing bottles which would be filled with wine or to put the filled bottles in cases.
David was paid six shillings a week.
22- How was David different from other boys who worked in the warehouse?
David was the only boy who had been school, all workers there were coarse and rough
people who used to work in dirty conditions for many hours.
23- How did David feel about his job in the warehouse?
He felt horror and deeply ashamed to have such a job or to think what his life was going to
be like. He was afraid that he would forget everything he had learnt from his mom or his
teachers. He would never find friends like his friends in school or get better position in life.
24- Who did David live with when he was working in the warehouse in London?
Mr. Mardstone asked Mr. Quinion the warehouse manager to find somewhere for David
to stay in London then he asked Mr. Micawber to find a place for David to stay in so he
offered David a spare room in the house he was renting with his family.
25- How was Mr. Micawber’s house?
It had several floors with empty dirty rooms and a very little furniture.
26- Describe Mr. Micawber’s family?
They were very boor. His wife Mrs. Micawber’s was a thin, tired looking woman with a
baby in her arms, the baby was one of twins. They had a four-year-old boy and a three-
year-old girl. The only servant was a young orphan girl.
27- Why was Mr. Micawber always poor?
Bec. he or his wife weren’t able to manage the money he got or afford his needs. So, he was
always in debt and his creditors always un happy of him as he wasn't always able to pay to
them.
28- How strange characters were Mr. and Mrs. Micawber?
They are moody according to the situations. Mr. Micawber sometimes looked so miserable
and depressed, next he was brushing his shoes singing a song before going out. Mrs.
Micawber had the same as her husband, sometimes she was lying on the floor with her
hair undone looking wild and depresses then another hour later she was cheerful eating a
good supper.
29- Why was Mr. Micawber sent to the Kin’s Prison?
He couldn’t pay for his creditors who became very tired of asking him for their money.
30- How was David helpful to Mr. Micawber’s family when he was in prison?
David used to buy his food from his wage because Mr. Micawber’s family always suffered
a shortage of food as there weren’t regular meals in his house so after Mr. Micawber was
sent to the prison David used to share his food with the family.
31- What did Mr. Micawber decided to do after he was setting free from the prison?
Mr. Micawber stayed for weeks in prison then his creditors were so sure that he wasn’t
able to pay for them so he was set free. He decided to leave London and live in Davon in
the country.
32- What did David decide to do after knowing Mr. Micawber’s intention to leave London?
He didn’t like working in the warehouse so he decided to ask for help his father's aunt
who lived in Dover in Kent Mrs. Betsy Trotwood. Peggotty had sent him ten shilling to use
when it was needed.
