QUESTION 1: READING COMPREHENSION (15 marks)
Read the text below and answer the questions that follow.
Animal Rescue
1. It was a beautiful warm evening. Meisie and her friends
were enjoying a party on the beach. It was Meisie’s
eleventh birthday.
2. As the evening turned into night, one of the boys had an idea. “Let’s go out to sea!”
he said. “We can take my father’s fishing boat. He won’t mind.”
3. ‘Don’t be crazy,’ said Meisie. Anything could happen.
4. But Meisie’s friends thought it was a good idea to go out on the boat. If she didn’t go
with them, she’d be left all alone on the beach, and it was her birthday.
5. The party moved to the harbour. They climbed into Taliep’s father’s boat and headed
out to the sea. There was no moon to light the water, and everything was very dark.
The children danced and sang and shouted.
6. Two of the boys began to fight. Their fighting knocked Meisie from the boat into the
water, but they didn’t notice that she was missing until they got back to the harbour.
Meisie sank down into the cold dark water. She had
called for help, but no one on the noisy boat had heard.
She was not a very good swimmer. She was going to drown.
7. Then she felt a smooth shape carrying her up. She looked around in the darkness
and saw that it was a family of dolphins that were helping her. She held on to one of
them and it carried her out of the water.

QUESTION 3: SUMMARY (5 marks)
Read the article and summarise the main ideas in 5 sentences (40 - 50 words).
Be careful not to copy more than four consecutive words from the text. Use the facts and
rephrase the sentences into your own words.
How can I stay safe when swimming?
Read the signs posted in a swimming area and follow the safety information. Never run on
the pool deck. This area can be very slippery. Shallow water, underwater logs or big rocks
are all dangerous when diving into dams or rivers and can cause serious injury. Only dive
into areas where it is safe to dive.
Check your surroundings and enter the water slowly with your feet first. Check the area
before you enter the water, as swimming conditions or surroundings may change. Swim
only where you feel comfortable. Do not go farther or deeper than you can handle.
Use the “buddy system” and take a friend or adult with you who is a strong swimmer. Make
sure you watch out for each other.
