2 RELATIVE PRONOUNS
Definition of relative pronouns
A Relatives pronoun is one which is used to refer to
nouns mentioned previously, whether they are people,
places, things, animals, or ideas. Relative pronouns can
be used to join two sentences. The most common
relative pronouns are who, whom, which, whose,
that.
1. Who (refers to a person as verb’s
subject)
Example: The person arrived late. (sentence 1)
Was very apologetic. (sentence 2)

The person who arrived late was very
apologetic. (relative pronoun)
The girl won the award. (sentence 1)
Is a well-known artist. (sentence 2)
The girl who won the award is a well-
known artist. (relative pronoun)
2. Whom (refers to a person as verb’s
object)
Example: The favorite teacher in our school.
(sentence 1)
I admire is Mr. David. (sentence 2)
The favorite teacher in our school whom
I admire is Mr. David. (relative pronoun)
He is the man. (sentence 1)
I told you about. (sentence 2)
He is the man whom I told you about.
(relative pronoun)
3. Which (refers to an animal and thing)
Example: The song was very catchy. (sentence 1)
I listened on Spotify. (sentence 2).
The song which I listened on Spotify was
very catchy. (relative pronoun)
The dress was very elegant. (sentence 1)
She wore. (sentence 2)

The dress which she wore was very
elegant. (relative pronoun).
The bat comes out at night. (sentence 1)
Is the inspiration of The Batman.
(sentence 2)
The bat which comes out at night is the
inspiration of The Batman.
4. Whose (indicates possesion)
Example: The chef whose cooking is always
delicious is opening a new restaurant.
The car whose engine sounds awesome
is BMW.
The woman whose father is rich is my wife.
5. That (refers to a person, animal, and
things)
That is less formal than who, whom, which, and
whose. But it is often used in daily communication.
Example: The place that we visit is very beautiful.
The course that I joined was Exacta.
