ASSIGNMENT
(Man-made Hazards)

INSTRUCTIONS: Based on the topic. Answer the following questions in a paragraph form.
1. What specific man-made hazards is/are most likely affected your family?
2. Make your own safety protocols in your household.
3. Make a slogan campaign to promote safety in the community.

Man-made hazards are events that are caused by humans and arise around human
settlements. The events that led up to a man-made threat can be the product of intentional or
negligent human behavior, but their consequences can be just as devastating. Way back 2012,
we were afflicted by Typhoon Bopha, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Pablo. It was the
strongest tropical cyclone on record to ever affect the southern Filipino island of Mindanao,
making landfall as a Category 5 super typhoon with winds of 175 mph (280 km/h). Although this
is a natural disaster, but due to human negligence the after effects have caused the most
casualty, flooding – one of the most catastrophic man-made disasters that robbed the life of
many. I was 12 years of age when that happened. Even up today, I still remember what
happened in that stormy night. It left a stain on me that I can never forget. Me and my siblings
were so young that time that we could barely survived that disastrous event. When Typhoon
Pablo bore down on Mindanao, my family stayed at home thinking that everything’s going be
alright. Unaware of what may happen further, the idea of evacuating was no way near our
plans. But when the storm worsened, that’s when we realized that we made the wrong decision
of staying. Flood rushed in sweeping everything in its path. Our appliances and furniture were
nowhere visible. All of them sank down and swept away by water. What’s worse is that, we
lived beside a creek which makes everything much worse. I almost drowned as I hang tight on
my brother’s back as he swam through the raging flood. When we checked on our house the
following day, I could no longer see a single trace of it. Our belongings were soaked in
floodwater, my books and school materials all destroyed. As I recall our narrow escape and our
losses, I can’t do anything but break down in tears. Help soon came, giving ease to our
trembling stomachs. Some families who had lost almost everything that night decided to move
somewhere else. But for someone like us who could barely even manage to live the day, stayed
and tried everything to bounce back our feet. Moments like this helped me develop a strong
will to survive from this harsh world. are a highlight of my work. Although it taught me valuable
lessons, it will always be a mix of pain and joy, sadness and gratitude.

Promulgating safety protocols refers to the practice of keeping minor safety hazards at
bay by following specific safety procedures. The following are some good safety precautions to
take. To begin, keep clutter out of the way of doors, stairways, and stairs, and make sure all
cords are out of the way of travel to avoid trips. Keep items where they can be easily reached,
or use a ladder or step-stool to access them safely, and lock drawers, cabinets, and cupboards
when not in use. If you have any potentially toxic solvents or cleaners in your house, make sure
they are kept safely and properly. When not in use, switch off or unplug appliances in the
kitchen. Getting an emergency action plan for your house, such as an escape path, exit plan,
and emergency meeting place, is often helpful. Make sure that all family members who live in
the house are aware of your plans, and only share house codes or keys with those you really
trust. If you're going to be away from home for an extended period of time, don't post about it
on social media. Fires in the home can be severely damaging, if not fatal. Cooking should never
be left unattended, and clutter, grease, and flammable objects such as hairspray, bug spray, or
air freshener should be kept off stoves and counter surfaces. Additionally, when cooking, wear
tight clothing to prevent something from catching fire. If you have a fireplace, candles, or other
open flame sources, never leave them unattended and make sure they're on a non-flammable
surface away from any potentially flammable objects. Although electricity is extremely
convenient, it can also pose a number of safety risks if it is not properly managed. To avoid
possible electrical hazards, both damaged or frayed wires and cords should be replaced, and
obsolete or defective equipment should be discarded. When removing light bulbs, make sure to
follow the proper procedures. Never overload your electrical outlets; if possible, use extension
cords; and only purchase electrical items that have been tested by a nationally recognized
laboratory. Make sure your kitchen is clean and well-maintained, and keep raw meat and fish
away from vegetables to prevent food contamination. Handle raw meats with clean hands to
prevent spreading germs, and handle knives and other sharp cooking utensils with caution to
avoid injuries. Many of the usual emergency response products should be kept in a convenient
place in your house. Some of the items to be considered are: A first-aid kit containing bandages,
gauze, antibacterial wipes, eye patches, pain reliever, and other supplies; A medicine for a
common ailment, such as indigestion or a cold; If applicable, inhalers; Contact information for
emergency contacts, physicians, hospitals, and poison control centers

Let us remember that we should envision a country that has a “Safer, adaptive and
disaster resilient Filipino communities towards sustainable development.” This will be achieved
through the four distinct yet mutually reinforcing priority areas, namely, (a) Disaster Prevention
and Mitigation; (b) Disaster Preparedness; (c) Disaster Response; and (d) Disaster Recovery and
Rehabilitation.
