FOREWORD

This Indian Standard ( Third Revision ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 6 April
1989, after the d:afr finalized by the Structural Sections Sectional Committee had been approved by
the Structural and Metals Drvisicm Council.
Under the steel economy programme, a rational, efficient and economical series of Indian Standards
on beam sections, chanr.el sections and angle sections was evolved in 1957 and IS 808 : 1957 was
published covering junior, light weight, medium weight, wide flange and heavy weight beam sections;
junior, light weight and medium weight channel sections and equal and unequal leg angle sections.
This standard was revised in 1964.
In the second revision of this standard. parts relating to medium weight beam sections - MB series,
column sections - SC series, channel sections - MC and MCP series and equal and unequal leg angles
were revised and published as Parts 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 of IS 808, respectively. Sections not covered,in
these parts, however. continued in IS 808 : 1964.
In the present revision, the Sectional Committee felt it convenient to merge all the five parts into one
standard. The sections which were retained in IS 808 : 1964 subsequent to its second revision in five
parts are included in this standard with a view that these sections although not being rolled in the
country at present may in future be rolled owing to their efficiency and resultant economy in the use
of steel. However, the designers are advised to check from JPC/producers regardrng availability of
such sections.
Following additional modifications have been affected in this revision:
a) Medium weight beam sections MB 100 having the flange width and web thickness of 70 mm and
4’5 mm, respectively, has been modified to 50 mm flange width and 4’7 mm web thickness;
b) Two sections, namely, BFB 150 and RSJ 200 which are mainly used in railway electrification
have been included as SC 150 and WB 200, respectively;
c) Additional equal leg angles 60 60 x 4, 100 100 x 7 ( in place of 100 100 x 6.5 ), and 130 130 x 9
have been included in ihe supplimentary list;
d) Amendments issued so far to the various parts of the standard and to IS 808 : 1964 have been
incorporated; and
e) Mass, area and other sectional properties have been expressed in three significant places.

reviewed periodically; a standard-along with amendments is reaffirmed when such review indicates that
no changes arc needed; if the review indicates that changes are needed, it is taken up for revision. Users
of Indian Standards should ascertain that they are in possession of the latest amendments or edition by
referring to the latest issue of ‘BIS Handbook’ and ‘Standards Monthly Additions’.

FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Seventh Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft
finalized by the Wrought Steel Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Metallurgical
Engineering Division Council.

This standard was first published in 1962 and revised in 1969, 1975, 1984, 1992, 1999 and 2006. While reviewing
this standard, in the light of experience gained during these years, the Committee decided to revise it to bring
in line with the present practices being followed by the Indian steel industry, both in the integrated as well as
secondary sectors. The Committee further decided to harmonize the standard with the overseas standards on
carbon-manganese and high strength low alloy (HSLA) of structural steels.

In this revision, the following changes have been made:

a) Title has been modified and the word ‘low’ has been deleted, keeping in view the grades of steel
contained in the standard. Requirements of low tensile structural steel are covered in IS 15911 : 2010
‘Structural steel (ordinary quality) — Specification’.
b) Amendment No. 1 has been incorporated with suitable modifications.
c) Number of basic grades has been changed to nine. A new grade of E275, in line with European Standard,
has been incorporated to take care of the requirements of medium tensile structural steels in the
construction segment. Moreover, for each grade two to four sub-qualities have been introduced,
depending upon the grade, where sub-qualities A, BR, B0 and C, in line with other international standards,
indicate the mode of killing and impact test requirements.
d) The clause on ‘Manufacture’ has been modified, where the scope is suitably widened to include
different steel making and rolling practices in vogue.
e) Silicon content of semi-killed steel has been clearly specified.

For all the tests specified in this standard (chemical/physical/others), the method as specified in relevant
ISO Standard may also be followed as an alternate method.

While revising the standard, assistance has been derived from the following international specifications:

ASTM A 36 : 2008 Specification for structural steel

ASTM A 572 : 2007 Specification for high-strength low-alloy columbium-vanadium structural steel

EN 10025-2 : 2004 Hot rolled products of structural steels

The composition of the Committee responsible for the formulation of this standard is given in Annex A.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value,
observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with
IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number of significant places retained in
the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

respectively.
7 Copper may be present between 0.20 to 0.35 percent as mutually agreed to between the purchaser and the manufacturer. The
copper bearing quality shall be designated with a suffix Cu, for example E 250 Cu. In case of product analysis the copper content
shall be between 0.17 and 0.38 percent.
8 Incidental element — Elements not quoted in Table 1 shall not be intentionally added to steel without the agreement of the
purchaser, other than for the purpose of finishing the heat. All reasonable precautions shall be taken to prevent the addition
from scrap or other materials used in manufacture of such elements which affect the hardenability, mechanical properties and
applicability.
9 Nitrogen content of steel shall not exceed 0.012 percent which shall be ensured by the manufacturer by occasional check
analysis.
10 The steel, if required, may be treated with calcium based compound or rare earth element for better formability.
11 Lower limits for carbon equivalent and closer limits for other elements may be mutually agreed to between the purchaser and
the manufacturer.

(FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING PURPOSES)
(Third Revision)
o. F' 0 R E W 0 R D
0.1 This Indian Standard ( Third Revision) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 25 August 1983, after the draft finalized by the
Light Metals and Their Alloys Sectional Committee had been approved
by the Structural and Metals Division Council.
0.2 This standard was first issued in 1956 and subsequently revised in
1967 and 1975. Further revision became necessary as three new materials
were required to be included as they found wide application in different
industries. The main modifications made in the standard are as follows:
a) A new high strength alloy 76528 has been included.
b) Aluminium of 99'6 purity 19600 has. been included and the
chemical. compositions of 19000 and 19500 aluminium have been
modified to align them with the requirements of IS: 2590-
1979* .
c) For both heat-treatable and non-heat treatable alloys, the pro-
perties in the '0' temper have been specified as maximum.
0.3 Some characteristics and typical uses of the alloys covered in the
standard have been listed in Appendix A.
0.4 The major alloying el~ments have been printed in bold face in the
chemical composition ( see Table 1 ).
0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of
this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accor-
dance with IS : 2 .1960t. The number of significant places retained in the
rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value
in this standard.
·Primary aluminium ingots for remelting for general engineering purposes (firll
rdvision ).

faces is greater than 6 mm.
2.1.2 Rod - A round solid section which is long in relation to cross
section having a diameter greater than 6 mm.
2.1.3 Regular Solid Section - A solid rolled, drawn or extruded section
other than round, polygonal or rectangular, which can be conveniently
divided into approximate rectangles with measurable dimensions, for
example, angles, channels, tees, etc.
2.1.4 Irregular Solid Section - A solid rolled, drawn or extruded section,
the profile of which cannot be divided readily into approximate rectangles
or measurable dimensions.
2.1.5 Heat-Treat17}ent Batch - A quantity of material of one alloy, of the
same dimensions and produced in the same way, solution-treated and
subsequently precipitation-treated in one furnace load. More than one
heat treatment batch may comprise a furnace load.

3. SUPPLY OF MATERIAL
3.1 General requirements for the supply of aluminium and aluminium
alloy products shall conform to IS : 1387-1967t.

4. FREEDOM FROM DEFECTS

4.1 The material shall be sound and free from harmful defects.
