Description
In this unit, you will use ratios and proportions to understand how humans compete and cooperate with one another. However,
ratios and proportions can also be useful in other, surprising contexts. Things that we often take for granted, like the fairy tales
we heard growing up or the politics that we hear about every day, can also be analyzed and understood through these important
mathematical tools. We will also discuss about recurring decimals, number lines and simple laws of exponents.

Logic is a method of reasoning and a system of principles used to build arguments and reach conclusions.

Identities and
relationships
Identify a specific global context exploration.
Part of studying the global context identities and relationships involves looking at how humans cooperate and compete with one
another. Ratios and proportions allow you to analyze these human interactions and even make decisions about what may be
fair or desirable. There are also times when competitors are forced to cooperate with one another, blurring the lines between
who may be a friend and who may be a foe.

Statement of Inquiry
Using a logical process to simplify quantities and establish equivalence can help analyze competition and cooperation.
Inquiry Questions
Type Inquiry Questions
Factual What is a ratio? / What is a proportion?
Conceptual How can you establish equivalence? / How are simplification and equivalence related?
Debatable What makes for healthy and fair competition? / Which is more about being equal, competition or
cooperation? Explain.

Students will practice empathy in the reflect and discuss activities when we discuss refugee problems and inequalities in the
workplace.
Integration
International Mindedness
There are many world issues at the moment in terms of fairness and inequality that can be discussed in this unit. Current situation
in Afghanistan. Refugees that were just accepted by Italy again after crossing the mediterranean.

minutes. Students will receive a rubric grade and comments. Word problems in the levels 5 - 8 questions relate to the SOI:
Equivalent forms of quantities can be used to assess inequalities in this world. Students answer questions that relate ratios and
proportions.

Description
Criterion A: Will assess knowledge and understanding for content taught throughout the unit.
Criterion B: Assesses the ability of learners in determining and predicting patterns in ratios.
Criterion C: Will assess the ability of the students to apply what they have learnt to real world problems and generalization.
Learning Experiences
Prior Learning Experiences
Students have prior knowledge of natural numbers, integers, fractions, decimals and percentages as well as factors, multiples
and primes and will have met simple ratios and rate problems in primary school. They will also have met probability in primary
school which involves ratio.

Differentiation
In this learning plan, students will explore multiple real-life contexts to application of ratios using tools (two color counters or
many objects). Students will represent and explain in words how they arrived at the ratios and proportions. This activity can be
implemented in groups or individually. Students can be provided with copies of notes, two color counters, number lines and
utilize color coding to organize information to connect mathematical representations.

Due to language problems, some students had difficulties understanding the concept of ratios, applying proportional
reasoning, and solving word problems involving ratios and proportions.
After the unit

Due to the difficulty experienced, a different approach to instructional and assessment strategy will be applied in future.
This may involve providing additional practice opportunities, offering more examples or visuals, or incorporating technology-
based resources to enhance student engagement and understanding.
