Assignment Guidelines:
• Assignments must be submitted by 11:59 PM on the submission due date noted in red above.
Assignments to be submitted through UM Learn.
• Late submission of assignments will be accepted up to three (3) days (including weekends and

Moment of a Force
Question 1
A child on a bicycle collides with a mailbox and exerts the force F shown. If the base of the pole
at O will fail if the magnitude of the moment there exceeds 60 N·m, determine if the mailbox will
fall over.

Question 2
The rope exerts a force of magnitude F=200lb on the top of the pole at B. Determine the
magnitude of the moment of F about A.

Question 3
The magnitude of the force F is 0.2 N and its direction cosines are 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑥 = 0.727, 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑦 =
−0.364, and 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑧 = 0.582. Determine the magnitude of the moment of F about the axis AB of
the spool.
