At the moment of writing this assignment, my name is Britany Conway chung.
I was born
February 19 2004 in Toronto, Ontario making me a Pisces. In the area I was born in, the race of the
people living there was mostly black/people of color. Toronto at the time was a very populated city in a
developed country. My assigned gender at birth was female and I identify as a female today. In the matter
of my socio-economic status I find myself in the middle socio-economic class. What that means is
individuals and households who typically fall between the upper class and the lower class within the
socio-economic hierarchy. Concerning my sexual orientation I am a heterosexual or “straight” young
woman meaning I feel sexual and romantic attraction toward people who are of the opposite gender
assigned at birth. I do have a disability, A.D.D. or “Attention Deficit Disorder”. ADD is used to
categorize people with inattentive and impulsive traits but without characteristics of [Link] a
young black woman I support and follow the “black lives matter” movement and children’s health
movement. As a child growing up there were many different experiences that made me who I am today.
For example my brothers and I were adopted when i was 5. This action alone shaped who I would be and
who I am. Another crucial experience I had was when I was insulted and discriminated against by my
father’s side of the family. This incident caused me to be withdrawn and secretive. Looking back at them,
they are important because they shaped and molded me into the person I am today. One challenge I faced
when growing up was bullying. As a young child I found myself often being the target of bullying due to
my race. This experience was significant because it helped me push myself to the best of my abilities. It
also helped me learn about biases, racism, discrimination and any other factor that would make me be
treated differently. For example as a child I was maturely aware of my ethnicity and how it puts me at a
disadvantage. Furthermore I am able to push myself to try and overachieve. One opportunity that made
me believe in God was when I first met my mother. It was at an adoption picnic and when we made eye
contact I knew she was the one, we couldn’t be separated. And it all makes sense, we talk the same and
have the exact same birthmark. This moment and the rest of my life were planned by god. I have been
treated both positively and negatively mostly due to my gender and race. An example is when I was in
grade 8 I had a negative encounter with a boy who would make sexual comments and threats towards me
and sometimes he would use racial slurs. It got to a point I was scared to go to school, so I confronted the
principal. During this my mom was my support and my rock. She has influenced your values, beliefs,
sense of self, etc. She has taught me to be brave and to be the version of myself I would want to see in a
mirror. It's because of my mom that today I have the values I have. She is a strong believer in God and
has instilled the values of love, kindness, respect, honesty and determination in me. My family’s main
values are Communication, trust, and love. My family believes that communication is essential. For
everyone to live in harmony there must be transparent communication, additionally communication is
important because my family likes to know where each other is, especially in the way the world is right
now. Trust is another important value in my family, trust is when you have strong belief in the reliability
of others. We believe that the People who trust each other can perform their duties more successfully at
home, at work, or elsewhere. As for schooling I struggled with my education because of my ADD and
ethnicity. Teachers would unconsciously treat me differently than others, for example my ADD made it
hard to focus and get things done on time or hand in things when due. Things such as race, social norms,
values, socialization, power, privilege, gender, class, inequality, subculture and sexuality all manifested
in my life due to many things. This being said has made me realize that my parents' lived experiences
have contributed to my everyday life. Not only that but the society has evolved as a whole, meaning what
is normal today wasn’t normal years ago. For example there are many different theories that explain
socialization. One theory is the Psychological Perspectives on Self-Development by Sigmund Freud
(1856–1939). He and many other psychologists believe in self-development that helps us become
socialized. For help picturing it here is an example. Freud believed that personality and sexual
development were closely linked, and he divided the maturation process into psychosexual stages: oral,
anal, phallic, latency, and genital (Freud 1905). He hypothesized that one’s self-development is closely
linked to early stages of development, like breastfeeding, toilet training, and sexual awareness (Freud
1905). The oral stage is the first and important stage after birth. If your oral stage is neglected you may
develop an oral fixation in adulthood. An adult with an oral fixation may indulge in overeating or binge
drinking. This can cause adults to become alcoholic, something that people in society are against.
Another example is the anal stage, if this stage is neglected or overbared you may have an adult who is
an unorganized person who may rebel against authority or be ashamed of their body and thrive to
please people with authority. This can explain why some people are the way they are or why some
people become delinquents. For me my anal stage was not neglected because I have a strong respect for
any person of authority and seniors. This has also made me act in the social norms of society by not
being a delinquent who resorts to crime.
