School Message
Updates to the Ministry of Education and Child Care reporting policy require at least 5 updates regarding your
student’s learning throughout the school year. You will receive 4 written Learning Updates (Report Cards) and at
least 2 informal learning updates which could be a conference, email or call from a teacher. For students in
grades K-9, the Provincial Proficiency Scale and descriptive feedback will now be used to explain where a student
is at in their learning and how they can improve. Students in grades 10, 11 and 12 will continue to receive letter
grades and percentages to ensure successful transition to post-secondary. They will now also receive descriptive
feedback on their written Learning Updates to clearly explain where they are at in their learning and how they can
move forward. They will also receive a graduation status update on the last Learning Update of every school year
in grades 10, 11, and 12. Students in all grades will self-reflect on the Core Competencies and set goals for
themselves. This student-centered reporting practice gives every student input into their learning and helps them
keep growing throughout their lives. The graduation status update and student self-reflection and goal setting
can be found in the Parent Connect and Student Connect portal. For more information, please see our school
website under Parent Info/Assessment and Reporting Information.
LITERARY STUDIES 11 Term 1: 86% (A)
Mr. Ian Bush
TERM 1 COMMENTS: The class is continuing to gain skill in technical writing and conversational discourse.
Students should set personal reading goals, continue to improve on grammar, and be proud of their contributions
to class so far. Hayson has reported that they are finding success in the class. Upon reflecting on their work this
term, they commented, "I am proud of my work on the Summary assignment because I think that I have done a
great job summarizing the short story and hitting all the key points from it." They also made a personal goal for
themselves for next term: "I need to work on my vocabulary. I plan to do this by reading more books."

PHYSICS 11 Term 1: 74% (B)
Mr. Ross Gilbert Jesse Bateman
TERM 1 COMMENTS: Physics 11 is a demanding academic course which requires daily work both inside and
outside class to master the concepts. Student competency is developed over the length of the course. The grade
here reflects their understanding to this point: there is a long way to go both in terms of subject and also
assessments. Lower grades than expected can be improved with persistent and dedicated work towards
understanding.
All students can benefit from continuous review of both new and old material. Students should focus on learning
the concepts and how they relate to one another rather than focusing on solving individual problems. The overall
goal is to have students be able to attack and complete ANY problem that we set for them rather than just answer
questions that they have already seen. Extra work can always be completed by doing more problems from the
text, redoing examples from class or homework, or through exploring the many offerings on-line for the concepts
that are being studied.
The first 2 units of the course (1-D and 2-D Kinematics) were taught by Mr. Gilbert. The 3rd unit (Dynamics) was
taught by Mr. Bateman (Teacher-Candidate from UVic), and he will also teach the fourth unit (Energy) after which
Mr. Gilbert will return for the last 2 units and the final exam. We will send an update slip home with students with
this report.
Mr. Gilbert:
Hayson is working hard to learn the material. I would like to see Hayson focus on learning the underlying
concepts being taught instead of just focusing on how to solve specific problems. If you master the concepts, you
can answer any questions not just the ones you have already seen. Work hard on this in the second term.
Mr. Bateman:
Hayson has shown a solid understanding of the dynamics/forces concepts covered in this course. He has
consistently shown an ability to accurately identify all the factors in a problem and formulate plans. So far in this
course he has also been able to:
- Communicate his thinking in a clear and organized manner
- Successfully convert diagrams and models into their matching mathematical equations
- Create diagrams and pictures to model problems and situations accurately
As we move forward, I would like to see Hayson spend more energy on the details in his solution by either
proofreading his solutions before submitting them, or by working through problems more slowly.

WOODWORK 11 Term 1: 96% (A)
Wendy Irish
TERM 1 COMMENTS: Hayson has demonstrated the ability to use the shop equipment and tools. He can measure
accurately, understand shop procedures and follow plans to produce a completed project. After completing a
project with specific parameters students have been designing and constructing their own tea light project.
Hayson's creativity, attention to detail and work ethic are exemplary. He has started building a tray/lap desk/table
project which includes finger joints, lamination, wooden hinges, use of the table saw, planer, mitre saw and
jointer. Hayson you are encouraged to further develop your skills in the shop and continue to challenge yourself
by designing and building your own projects .Excellent start to the semester.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP 11 Linear
Annalee Tyler Mr. Chris McDonald
TERM 1 COMMENTS: Leadership students become the backbone of the school with all that they contribute! So far
this year they have engaged in a Welcome Back corn feast for the entire school, helped introduce our first ever
"Reynolds Gives" campaign and hosted fun events such as our Halloween Dance. Right now the students are
forming groups and determining projects for quarter 2. Please have your student share information from their
Google Classroom account with you to see the course requirements, quarterly project reflections, theory
powerpoints, group team building activities, and above and beyond activities that can be done to help them meet
their personal leadership goals. As this is a linear course, official grades will not be reported until the end of the
semester.
Right now Hayson is missing the quarter 1 theory research project and the Q1 group reflection.
Please contact Chris McDonald cmcdonald@[Link] or Annalee Tyler atyler@[Link] if you have any
questions.

HUMAN PERFORMANCE 11 Term 1: 94% (A)
Mr. Chris McDonald
TERM 1 COMMENTS: In CP Rec we have so far completed units exploring anatomical terms, osteology, myology,
and first aid. We have just started a cardiology unit and will then explore sports injuries. Hayson has
demonstrated a proficient understanding of the concepts explored in class and has excellent work habits, as well
as a desire to learn. Thanks for being a valuable member of our class Hayson!
