correlation is Rs = 0.979), with the first “significant” change occurring


with the City University of New York whose ranking increases from 44
to 34 quickly followed by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst
whose ranking increases from 70 to 37. The other major changes
involved departments moving from the bottom 25 percent of depart-
ments to the bottom third of departments—advances to be sure but
not that significant. The exception is the University of Missouri, Kansas
City, which moves from the bottom 6 percent of the departments to
almost the top half of departments. So while there is movement in the
overall productivity rankings, they generally involve the movement of
“heterodox” departments from the lower to the middle ranks, thus
making them look more like the “average” mainstream department,
although the differences in the aggregate productivity is fairly small, as
indicated by the z-score in column 4 of Table 2.19

department ranks when its heterodox-adjusted total productivity sum
