1. A particle inside a hollow sphere of radius r, having a coefficient of friction

can rest up to a height of

(A) 0.125r (B) 0.133r (C) 0.25r (D) 0.5r

2. Two rigid massless rods PR and RQ are joined at frictionless pin-joint R and are
resting on ground at P and Q, respectively, as shown in the figure. A vertical force F
acts on the pin R as shown. When the included angle θ < 90 o, the rods remain in static
equilibrium due to Coulomb friction between the rods and ground at locations P and
Q. At θ = 90o, impending slip occurs simultaneously at points P and Q. Then the ratio
of the coefficient of friction at Q to that at P (µQ /µP) is ………. (round off to two
decimal places).

3. A horizontal bar 1 m long and of negligible

weight rests on rough inclined plane, as
shown in figure. If the angle of friction is
15o, determine the minimum value of x at
which the load Q = 200 N may be applied
before slipping occurs.

4. A uniform rod KJ of weight W shown in the figure

rests against a frictionless vertical wall at the point
K and a rough horizontal surface at point J. It is
given that W = 10 kN, a = 4 m and b = 3m. The
minimum coefficient of static friction that is
required at the point J to hold the rod in equilibrium
is ___________. (round off to three decimal places)

5. A block of negligible mass rests on a surface

that is inclined at 30o to the horizontal plane as
shown in the figure. When a vertical force of
900 N and a horizontal force of 750 N are
applied, the block is just about to slide. The
coefficient of static friction between the block
and surface is …….. (round off to two decimal
places).

6. A wedge M and a block N are subjected to forces P and Q as shown in the figure. If
force P is sufficiently large, then the block N can be raised. The weights of the wedge
and the block are negligible compared to the forces P and Q. The coefficient Of friction
(µ) along the inclined surface between the wedge and the block is 0.2. All other
surfaces are frictionless. The wedge angle is 30o. The limiting force P, in terms Of Q,
required for impending motion of block N to just move it in the upward direction is
given as P = αQ.

The value of the coefficient ' α '

(round off to one decimal place) is

(A) 0.6
(B) 0.5
(C) 2.0
(D) 0.9
