A general practitioner (GP), also known as a primary care
physician, is a healthcare professional who offers initial medical care to
patients suffering from any number of health issues. General practitioners
(GPs) usually serve as the first point of contact for patients requesting
healthcare services, and they play an important role in the US healthcare
system

General practitioner doctors are well-known for offering preventive care,

diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions, managing chronic
conditions, referring patients to specialists, providing continuity of care,
working in a team-based care paradigm, and advocating for patient
health. GPs are trained to identify and treat a wide range of health
conditions, and they collaborate with their patients to create personalized
treatment plans that take their medical history, lifestyle, and preferences
.into consideration

The Role of a General Practitioner

1. Providing Preventive Care
GPs offer patients preventive treatment, such as regular check-ups, health
screenings, and vaccinations. They work to spot any health risks and
.advise patients on how to stay healthy and avoid illness

2. Diagnosing and Treating Acute and Chronic Conditions

General practitioners (GPs) are trained to diagnose and treat a broad
variety of acute and chronic conditions. They collaborate with their
patients to create personalized treatment plans that take their medical
history, lifestyle, and preferences into consideration. GPs are frequently
able to handle multiple conditions in a patient and, when necessary,
.collaborate closely with specialists
3. Managing Chronic Conditions
GPs play an important role in managing chronic conditions such as
diabetes, high blood pressure, and asthma. They work with patients to
develop long-term treatment plans that include lifestyle changes,
medication, and monitoring. GPs also help patients manage the emotional
and psychological aspects of chronic illness, such as depression and
.anxiety

Primary care is the provision of integrated, accessible health care services

by physicians and their health care teams who are accountable for
addressing a large majority of personal health care needs, developing a
sustained partnership with patients, and practicing in the context of
family and community. The care is person-centered, team-based,
community-aligned, and designed to achieve better health, better care,
.and lower costs

Primary care physicians specifically are trained for and skilled in

comprehensive, first contact, and continuing care for persons with any
undiagnosed sign, symptom, or health concern (the “undifferentiated”
patient) not limited by problem origin (biological, behavioral, or social),
organ system, or diagnosis. Additionally, primary care includes health
promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, counseling, patient
education, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses in a
variety of health care settings (e.g., office, inpatient, critical care, long-
term care, home care, schools, telehealth, etc.). Primary care is performed
and managed by a personal physician who often collaborates with other
health professionals, and utilizes consultation or referral as appropriate.
Primary care provides patient advocacy in the health care system to
accomplish cost-effective and equitable care by coordination of health
care services. Primary care promotes effective communication with
patients and families to encourage them to be a partner in health care.
Primary healthcare is the first point of contact between individuals and
the healthcare system. It plays a vital role in promoting and maintaining
health, preventing diseases, and managing chronic illnesses. Primary
healthcare services are provided by a team of healthcare professionals,
including General Physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. The
World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the importance of
primary healthcare in achieving universal health coverage and promoting
health equity.

Referral to specialists

General Physicians work closely with other healthcare professionals,

including specialists, to provide comprehensive care to patients. They
refer patients to specialists when necessary and coordinate care to ensure
that patients receive the appropriate care and treatment.

Coordination of care

General Physicians play a key role in coordinating care for patients with
complex health needs. They work with other healthcare professionals to
develop a care plan that meets the patient's needs and ensures continuity
of care across different healthcare settings.

Patient advocacy

General Physicians are advocates for their patients. They help patients
navigate the healthcare system and ensure that their rights and needs are
met. They also advocate for policies and programs that promote health
equity and access to healthcare for all individuals and families.

General Physicians play a critical role in primary healthcare. They

provide comprehensive care to individuals and families, from preventive
care to the management of acute and chronic illnesses.
