CHRISTOPHER LANCE PANES BSED-

MATHEMATICS 2A

MODULE 9: MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY AND

VARIABILITY
TASK 1: EVALUATING STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN A MATH PROGRAM
Scenario
You are an educational consultant hired by a school district to evaluate the
effectiveness of a new math program implemented in three different classes. The
program aims to improve student performance on standardized math tests. You
have been provided with the test scores from the latest exam for each class.
Data Sets

Class Student Test Scores

A 78, 85, 92, 88, 76, 95, 89, 84, 91, 82

B 67, 72, 70, 75, 68, 74, 73, 71, 69, 76

C 90, 85, 87, 92, 94, 88, 91, 93, 89, 86

Task Instructions
1. Calculate the Measures of Central Tendency for Each Class:
 Mean: Calculate the average score for each class.
 Median: Find the middle score when arranged in ascending order.
 Mode: Identify any score that appears most frequently.
2. Calculate the Measures of Variability for Each Class:
 Range: Determine the difference between the highest and lowest
scores.
 Variance: Compute the variance to understand how much scores vary
from the mean.
 Standard Deviation: Calculate the standard deviation to assess the
spread of scores.
3. Present Your Findings:
 Create a table summarizing your calculations for each measure of
central tendency and variability.

Deliverables

Class Mean Median Mode Range Variance Standard Deviation

A 86 86.5 19 37.78 6.15

B 71.5 71.5 9 9.17 3.03

C 89.5 89.5 9 9.17 3.03

Interpretation

Write a brief report (1-2 paragraphs) interpreting your findings. Consider

questions such as:

1. Which class performed best overall?

Ans. Class C performed best overall with a mean score of 89.5.

2. How consistent were the scores within each class?

Ans. Class B and Class C had the most consistent scores with a standard
deviation of 3.03, while Class A had the least consistent scores with a
standard deviation of 6.15.

3. What might these results suggest about the effectiveness of the math
program?

Ans. The result suggest that the math program may not be equally effective
for all classes because the data shows that Class B has a lower performance
compared to Class A and C. Therefore , the teaching methods should be
change or develop to improve student’s engagement and performance.

Additional Challenge

Based on your analysis, recommend specific strategies to improve student

performance in Class B, which has lower scores compared to Classes A and C.
Consider factors such as teaching methods, student engagement, or additional
resources.

Ans. To improve the performance of Class b, I recommend that the teacher

should review and diversify their teaching methods to better suit different
learning styles, increase student engagement through interactive activities and
real-life applications, provide additional support like tutoring and supplemental
materials, and conduct assessments to identify and address the specific learning
gaps.
