SYLLABUS

1929 2025

28 FEBRUARY – 23 MARCH

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES – TUESDAY, 21 JANUARY 2025

www.bromleyfestival.org
Registered Charity No. 286229
WELCOME TO THE BROMLEY (KENT) FESTIVAL
OF MUSIC AND SPEECH

As I announced last year Bromley Festival 2024 would be my last as

Chairman/Secretary but I am pleased to be able to report that two ‘willing’ people
came forward and hence Bromley Festival 2025 will take place.

Festival 2024 was another success with plenty of entries in most sections although
the Guitar and Singing sections could do with some more entries. The venues
were well received as were the comments of the adjudicators.

I should like to thank you all for your support over the past years and please do
continue to support our new Chairmen/Secretaries (they have decided to run it
jointly). I shall still be in the background to assist them in any way I can and wish
them both well in their new venture. It was a case of find a busy person and they
will take it on !

For those of you who were not at the prizewinners concert I was presented as a
thank you some models of Piglet, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger for my garden. I
already had Eeyore and it was felt he was feeling lonely ! I have also planted a
really pretty rhododendron in my garden so there is plenty to remind me of the time
I have spent in recent years. Thank you.

With all good wishes for Bromley Festival 2025.

Regards

Monica Sanderson
WELCOME TO THE BROMLEY (KENT) FESTIVAL
OF MUSIC AND SPEECH

Under New Management but with familiar faces.

We have both been helping with the Festival for a number of years in many
background roles, by assisting Monica and all the Committee make the Festival run
as smoothly as possible.

Monica has done a wonderful job over the years having been thrust into the role
unexpectedly 11 years ago but has handled everything with grace and poise. We
are grateful she has agreed to stay in the role of advisor as we are going to need all
the guidance and support we can get.

The Festival is only possible because a dedicated team invest their time and efforts
freely to bring together such a wide and varied selection of classes in music and
speech which culminates in a month of fantastic music and drama. Volunteer
helpers man a number of venues, assist adjudicators, direct entrants, teachers and
supporters and do a myriad of other jobs to make the Festival happen. Their help is
greatly appreciated.

Two of our Committee members, Annette Barber and Jean Lines, have sadly
passed away in the last year. We have been very grateful for their help and
guidance over the years and they will be greatly missed.

Since Covid the number of strings, wind, brass and guitar entries have fallen so this
year we have decided to amalgamate these sections together and have them on
one weekend with one adjudicator in order to make it more fun for entrants and
have better audiences to enjoy the music. Entries will still be sent to the relevant
section heads.

It has been our privilege and joy in the time we have been involved with the Festival
to see performers flourish and blossom over the years. Many take the lessons they
learn here to give them courage and confidence in the future, this is true not just of
our younger entrants but all participants.

We look forward to meeting many of you and hope you will put your entries in early.
If you have questions we will reply but as we are all volunteers please be patient
with us.

We hope you will support us in helping to make this a wonderful year with lots of
entries, enjoyed in good spirit by all.

With best wishes and hopes for the 2025 Festival.

Bridget Dunk and Julia Morley – Joint Chair

BROMLEY FESTIVAL

Bromley Festival was inaugurated at a public meeting in

October 1928. The then Mayor of Bromley, Alderman E. Ford
Duncanson, was the first Chairman and expressed the hope
that it would be a ‘Festival for Bromley people run by Bromley
people’. To raise funds, a Grand Inaugural Concert was held
in May 1929 at the Methodist Central Hall, London Road, and
several distinguished local musicians including the Misses
Marjorie and Dorothy Whyte of Ripley fame, were involved.
The first competitions were held in November 1929 with
classes for Pianoforte, Strings, Solo Singing, Choirs and
Elocution. Many of the trophies date from that time.

The Festival was held each November until 1939 when, on the
outbreak of World War II, the Committee decided to postpone
activities until further notice. The next Council Meeting took
place in July 1945 and it was decided to re-establish the
Festival in March 1946 at Stratford House School. Since then
the Festival has been held annually in various halls and
churches in the Borough. The present name – the Bromley
(Kent) Festival of Music and Speech – was adopted in 1978
and the Festival received charitable status in 1983.

The early records show a strong interest in Piano, Strings and

Singing but in recent years there has been a marked increase
in the entries for Woodwind Instruments, including Recorders.
These changes reflect the greater variety of instrumental
teaching in schools today. It is one of the few Festivals in the
country to include Harp classes. The Speech and Drama
Section has also flourished and represents a greater number
of entries each year.

The Festival receives many entries each year, which proves

that it is widely valued as a platform for the performing arts in
Bromley. We look forward to hearing many fine performances
and are most grateful for your interest.

BROMLEY (KENT) FESTIVAL OF MUSIC AND SPEECH
CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech
work for amateur festivals everywhere to help create thousands of educational
performance opportunities for children and young people each year.
The Federation, and our member Festivals, are committed to ensuring safe environments
for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or
young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to
safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend
best practice which protects them.
This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers,
students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and our member Festivals.

We recognise that:
• the welfare of the child/young person is paramount
• all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief,
sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of
harm or abuse
• working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other
agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare.

The purpose of the policy:

• to provide protection for the children and young people who participate in our
festivals, including the children of festival members
• to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt in
the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at
risk of, harm

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by:

• valuing them, listening to and respecting them
• adopting child protection guidelines through procedures and safe working practice
for staff and volunteers
• recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made
• sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with children,
parents, staff and volunteers
• sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving
parents and children appropriately
• providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision,
support and training.

The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network
guidance or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be
communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year.

4
CREATING SAFER FESTIVALS FOR EVERYONE

The Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures to
create Safer Festivals for everyone:

1. A single, definitive Child Protection Policy adopted by all Federation Festivals.

2. One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers (FSO) appointed for each
Federation Festival.: Name: Geraldine McBain Phone: 01689 820322

3. Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child
Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers.
Including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child.

4. Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new Festival staff and
volunteers responsible for providing safe environments for everyone attending /
performing at a Federation Festival.

5. All Festival personnel will be clearly identified. All teachers/parents/guardians/carers

are asked to report all incidents of any nature to the Festival. All reported incidents will
be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child
Protection best practice advice. In addition we will ensure the availability of a quiet
area / room where concerns can be expressed in private.

6. For the duration of a Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for

the continuous care and supervision of their own children/pupils. If they are unable to
attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and
ensure that their children/pupils are aware of the identity and name of the person
responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues,
practice and changing areas that may be provided. The Festival cannot take
responsibility for any property left unattended.

7. No unauthorised photography, audio or video recording of children and young people is

allowed in the performance areas at our Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do
not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure
that their child is not included in official photos.

8. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If
this is the case we ask the responsible teachers/parents/guardians/carers to contact
the Festival Section Secretaries prior to arrival. The Festival actively seeks wherever
possible to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support –
or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion.

9. The Festival’s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for
Everyone is published explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and Website. By
completing and signing the entry form all parents / guardians / carers and teachers of
competitors under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have
obtained) the necessary consents for the competitors to take part in the Festival.
Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.

5
RULES
1. Eligibility of Competitors
Except where marked ‘Open’, the competitions are intended for amateurs.
Professionals are however allowed to take part:-
a) as Conductors c) in Open Classes
b) as Accompanists d) in Senior Orchestras
An amateur is someone who does not derive, or has not derived, his/her livelihood
from the branch of performance, defined by the class title, in which he/she seeks to
enter the Festival. In any amateur ensemble all members must adhere to this
definition.
2. Entry Forms
Entries must be made on the official forms in the centre of the Syllabus obtainable
online or from the Hon. Secretary, Committee members, libraries and music shops.
Competitors who enter for more than one class in the same Section should use a
single entry form. Entries for classes in different Sections must be made on
separate forms. Multiple entry forms should be used by teachers when entering a
number of pupils in the same Section. Entry forms may be photocopied.
Entry forms should be sent to the address shown in the Syllabus at the head of the
appropriate section. Competitors will be notified by email.
3. Age Limits - SCHOOL YEARS WILL APPLY FOR ALL PERFORMERS 18 AND
UNDER. See Choirs for additional rules page 23.
4. Entry Fees
Entry fees are as stated for each Class in the Syllabus. They must be sent with Entry
Forms and cannot be returned. If a receipt is required, a stamped addressed
envelope should be supplied. Cheques should be made payable to “Bromley (Kent)
Festival of Music and Speech” or by online payment. Class and child’s name
required as reference.
5. Closing date for entries is 21 January 2025. Late entries WILL NOT be accepted.
6A. Photocopying
In all ‘Own Choice’ classes a copy of the test piece must be provided for the
Adjudicator on the day. This does not apply to Set Test pieces, copies of which are
provided for the Adjudicator by the Festival.
Competitors are reminded that it is against the law to reproduce copyright materials
by any means, e.g. hand-written, typed or photocopied, without the permission of the
copyright owner (usually the publisher). The Festival will not accept the use of
reproduced copies of music or speech items unless accompanied by written
permission from the copyright owner.
However, when an ‘Own Choice’ item is selected from a publication containing
several different works and is not published separately, one copy may be made for
the specific use of the Adjudicator provided that the competitor has already
purchased his/her own printed copy. The Adjudicator’s copy will be retained and
destroyed by a Festival official immediately after the event. This permission
specifically does not apply to set test pieces. Performers should use the printed
copy. Photocopies may be used by accompanists, official or personal, provided they
are surrendered to the Adjudicator’s Steward after the performance.

6
6B. Own Choice Items
In all ‘Own Choice’ Classes (except where specified), the title and composer/author
of the piece MUST be stated on the entry form. Entries will not be accepted

stopped and/or penalised.

the Star Performer Competition.
No competitor may present an item, which they have performed and for which
they have been awarded a medal in the Bromley Festival in the previous 3
years.
6G. Infringements
In the event of an infringement of the Rules, e.g. change of ‘Own Choice’ pieces or
exceeding the time limit, the competitor will receive an oral and written adjudication
and a ‘Performer’ certificate and no numerical grade.
7. Accompanists
No recorded accompaniments are permitted. Competitors may provide their own
accompanists, but an Official Accompanist is available for Solo Singing, Choral,
String and Wind Classes. If this service is required, it should be stated on the Entry
Form, and the fee for each Class enclosed.
Individual £8.00 Groups £12.00
A copy of ‘Own Choice’ music must be sent to the Official Accompanist by
1st February. In the case of Strings & Ensembles, Woodwind/Brass & Ensembles &
Performance Classes, the copies must be sent by Tuesday 21st January.
Photocopies may be sent, provided a printed copy is available on the day (see Rule
6A). The name of the Competitor and the Class Number must be clearly stated on
the music. The copy should not be folded, and adequate postage must be affixed.
If the accompanist does not receive the music in advance, he/she reserves the right
to refuse to play. The Festival may appoint an accompanist other than the official
one when necessary.
As there will be no time for rehearsal on the day of the competition, competitors
wishing to rehearse must make their own arrangements with the Official Accompanist
in advance and an additional fee may be charged.

THE MUSIC ADJUDICATORS

STAR AWARD – GEOFFREY LYNN

In 1968, Geoffrey Lynn entered Edinburgh Medical School. After two miserable years he
left and shortly after entered the Royal College of Music.

Three years later, he had won several awards including the top violin prize.

While at college he started freelancing with various orchestras and teaching at the Royal
College of Music junior department.

He was then offered a position in the first violin section of the London Philharmonic where
he remained for forty six years.

More recently, he spent several years teaching at Sevenoaks School and is now busy
teaching privately at home in Bromley.

CHOIRS AND SINGING – JANE WILKINSON

Jane trained as a soprano at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and
then at the Royal College of Music where she won many competitions and awards.

She performs solo art song recitals across the country and has toured South Africa,
Europe and America. She is Head of Singing at Chelsea Academy and singing tutor
at Imperial College, London. A former member of the National Youth Choirs of Great
Britain she now conducts New Malden Voices and New Malden Youth Choir.

Jane has premiered many contemporary operas and frequently works alongside
composers on new works for the stage and for recordings. She has performed
oratorios and concerts at Edinburgh Festival, Royal Albert Hall and many other
distinguished venues.

Jane leads vocal masterclasses and workshops internationally and often runs
‘audition technique’ days for aspiring singers. Her voice has featured in a wide
variety of albums and recordings from children’s repertoire to contemporary folk
rock.

12
PIANOFORTE – SIMON LANE

Simon Lane has gained recognition for his compelling and sensitive performances, and
has collaborated with many of the world’s most exciting musicians including Danielle de
Niese, Iestyn Davies, Guy Johnston and Jack Liebeck. His CD release with cellist Philip
Higham was selected as Strad Magazine‘s ‘CD of the month’, and Gramophone Magazine
stated that “What is most striking about this performance is that, thanks to the brilliance of
Simon Lane at the piano, the virtuosity of the piano-writing is thrillingly brought out”.

Alongside frequent performances in London’s Wigmore Hall, Simon has appeared in

venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie and the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and more widely
across Europe and North America. Festival engagements include the Bachfest Leipzig, La
Festival de Musique de Menton, the Dubrovnik and Ljubljana Summer Festivals, and the
Leeds Lieder, Ryedale and Lichfield Festivals in the UK. More recently, he has made
frequent visits to Norway and Finland, where he particularly enjoys midnight swimming!

Simon studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and the Royal
Academy of Music in London, and his teachers have included Mark Ray, Dina
Parakhina, Michael Dussek, Julius Drake and Roger Vignoles.

Janine participated in her first festival at the age of five and, prior to her professional
training, she was a committed member of the amateur theatre scene. She trained at the
Arts Educational School, London, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre. She
completed an MA in Performance Research and, in 2021, was awarded a PhD from the
University of Bristol. As a teacher and freelance performance coach with over 15 years
experience, Janine has taught students whose ages have ranged from two to seventy-five
and continues to enjoy leading drama, musical theatre and dance workshops and
masterclasses in vocational, academic and cooperate environments.

As a professional performer, voiceover artist and choreographer, she has toured nationally
and performed in London’s West End. She is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education
Academy (AFHEA); TaPRA (The Theatre and Performance Research Association); and
the Society of Theatre Research (STR).

Since learning and reciting her very first poem, Janine has been dedicated to performance
and she is delighted to be an Adjudicator member of The British and International
Federation of Festivals. She looks forward to adjudicating Bromley Festival participants to
support, encourage and celebrate their work.

JENNY THORNTON

Jenny trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, gaining awards for Character
Acting and Most Promising Teacher. She has led the Performing Arts Teams in a large
comprehensive school, been an Assistant Principal for Edexcel, LAMDA examiner and
now enjoys running her own Performance Centre with ages from 4 years to adults
delivering drama, dance and musical theatre and also writing.

Her play called “Gone” gained a Commended when performed at The Orange Tree
Theatre in Richmond as did her most recent play “Young Love”. She was delighted when
LAMDA chose two of her pieces for their new acting anthology.

Her most recent teaching experience is working in a state school as a peripatetic teacher
as part of her “Outreach” programme. Jenny says “Drama is a life skill that changed me
from a stuttering introvert to a confident individual. We can give our children no better
opportunity." She is looking forward to adjudicating at the 2025 Bromley Festival.

fruition. Louise is really looking forward to returning to the Bromley (Kent) Festival and
sharing in these celebrations.

PETER DAYSON

Peter started his career as an actor in stage, television and film, progressing to writing,
directing and producing. He ran an International Award Winning Community Cross-Over
Project which took children and students from across the London Boroughs and performed
in the West End, transferring to Ohio, U.S.A. This involved artists from the industry working
with local actors and special needs students to produce an innovative and unique
international award winning production concept.

Peter has appeared in many TV series and sit-coms and in several Dr Who episodes with
five different Doctors. He has written several plays, 8 musicals, show-cased in the West
End and is currently working on a spy-thriller. As a Director Peter has been responsible for
many productions, was Artistic Director for Stafford Gatehouse for 8 years, worked for
Disney as a Director and Executive Producer and, also worked for Really Useful Theatre
Groups. Peter has directed over 50 pantomimes all over the country with such artists as

industry. Later this year he is directing two pantomimes in Leeds and Birmingham and is
currently working on a film script 'Vavasour', for pre production in 2025.

Peter’s passion is working with children, students and young performers, particularly
special needs to nurture, encourage, support and develop them with perhaps a career in

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR SPEECH CLASSES

Copyright and Indemnity

a. Competitors who perform ‘Own choice’ poetry, prose or solo dramatic items have no
need to seek copyright permission to do so, because the Bromley Festival has an
Agreement with the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society under which the authors
concerned are directly remunerated by the Society. To qualify for such copyright
indemnity, competitors must announce the title and author of their items, and the text
of the original (words or gender of the character) must not be changed in any way.

b. Duologues and group dramatic activities are not covered by the Agreement in a.
above, and competitors in the Classes concerned must obtain permission to
perform from the authors and/or publishers, pay any necessary royalty fees, and
present the receipt to the Adjudicator. These Classes are marked * (D7, D10-
D11, D69-D74) Competitors are reminded to apply in plenty of time for licences
as permission can take up to 6 weeks and that it should be approved before
entries are submitted in January. Plays published before 1948 are exempt from
copyright.

c. NO ALTERATION MAY BE MADE TO PUBLISHED TEXTS. UK Copyright law

does not allow for adaptations.

d. All items to be performed from memory except in Reading Classes.

e. Teachers should select material suitable to the ages of the performers, bearing in mind
that younger children may be present in the Hall.

47
f. Simple costumes and hand-held props may be used for duologues and acted scenes
(not verse-speaking). The stage must be set by the performers and cleared within
the given time limit.

g. Additional rules for Musical Theatre Classes on page 60.

h. Photocopies of poems and extracts are no longer covered by the Festival

Licence. Should you wish the adjudicator to have a copy you will need to either
