MECH3407: ADVANCED PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS AND COMPLEX

VARIABLES

December 8, 2021 Time: 9:30 a.m. — 12:30 p.m.

Attempt ALL questions in Section A and Section B.

Use the BLUE answer book for Section A and the PINK answer book for Section B.

Electronic Calculators:

Only approved calculators as announced by the Examinations Secretary can be used in this
examination. It is candidates’ responsibility to ensure that their calculator operates
satisfactorily, and candidates must record the name and type of the calculator used on the front
page of the examination script.

MECH3407: Advanced Partial Differential Equations and Complex Variables

SECTION A
(Answer ALL questions)

1
Al. Consider the function f(z) =
Z(Z+1)

(a) Identify all the singular points. (4 marks)

(b) We are going to expand f(z) about z =i. Sketch all the possible regions of
convergence. (4 marks)

(c) From (b), pick the region having the shape of a torus (2D donut). By making use of
the following power series: (12 marks)

:
1-z. “YeZz jz]}<1
Z

n=0

Expand f(z) for this region.

A2. The mapping equation of linear fractional transformation is given as follows:

WW, W2 — W3 Z-— Ly Z2 — Z3

W—-W3 W2-W, Z—Z3 22-24

Using the above equation, determine the linear fractional transformation that maps the
interior of a unit disk with centre at z = —2 to the right half of the w plane (i.e. u is
positive). Sketch the domain and image, and state clearly all directions and points you
have defined. After you have obtained the mapping function, pick a point to confirm your
finding. (10 marks)

A3. Consider the mapping function:

W=Z77
g

The following diagram (Figure A3) shows the domain in the z plane, where the top half
plane is shaded except the unit semi-circle:

(a) Sketch the corresponding image under this mapping function. Mark all key
information on the sketch and show clearly how the domain is mapped to the image.
(10 marks)

(b) Is the mapping function conformal? Why and/or why not? Support each of your
answers with an example. (5 marks)

A4. Using residue integration, evaluate

°° 1
[. (x? + a?) dx

where a > 0. (15 marks)

A5. We are going to find an approximate solution for x = 4 — e?*.

(a) On the same graph, sketch y = e* and x = 4 — y*. Identify all intersection points
along the x axis and y axis. (4 marks)

(b) In Newton-Raphson's method, we have this iteration setup:

mic
Xn+1 = Xy
F' Gn)
Make use of the above to solve x = 4 — e?”. Present all intermediate values up to 6
decimal places, preferably in a tabulated format. Terminate the iteration when the
IXnt17Xnl -
approximate error € = | is less than 0.01. Present the approximated solution
IXn+4l
to 6 decimal places. (6 marks)

B2. Solve the unsteady heat conduction problem

Uz = 3Uxy (O<x<2, t>0)

u(0,t) = u(2,t) =0 (t>0)
u(x, 0) = 50 (0<*# <2)
(10 marks)

B3. A tight string of 2 m long is initially set at rest but is given an initial velocity of
300 sin(47x) from its equilibrium position. The vibration is described by the following
partial differential equation:

0*u 0*u
