Chapter: 08- World Of Greens

A seedling is a young plant developing out of a embryo from a seed and has young
roots which are
not buried in the ground deeply. Roots help in holding the plant firmly in the
soil. They anchor the
plant to the soil. Hence it is easy to uproot a seedling but not a grown plant.

Leaves are termed as the “food factories of the plant.

Leaves contain green pigment called as chlorophyll which helps in photosynthesis by
capturing
sunlight and converting it into chemical energy. Hence leaves are called as food
factories of the
plants

Stem has two-way traffic.

It helps in transportation of water and food through two special channels called as
Xylem and
Phloem. Xylem conducts the water in only one direction that is up word whereas
phloem transports
the food from the leaves to all the parts of the plant.

Transpiration is the price paid by plants for photosynthesis.

Stomata opens and closes for exchange of gases during photosynthesis. Water is also
lost in the
form of water vapour from the stomata at the same time due to transpiration. Thus
it is said that
transpiration is the price paid by plants for photosynthesis.
Identify the plants in the picture given below and write a short note on modified
parts of the plant

A A: Onion: Modified Stem.

An onion has a modified stem called a bulb which stores food
It also helps in the reproduction of the plants.
B B:Potato: Modified Stem.
It is an underground stem also called as tuber.
It stores food in the form of starch hence becomes bulbus.
It also posses number of eyes which helps in reproduction of the new potato plants
when sown in
the soil.
C C: Ginger: Modified Stem.
It is an underground growing stem, which grows obliquely in the soil modified to
store food
It also helps in reproduction of theplant.
D D:Cactus: Modified Stem.
Stems have been modified into leaf like structure that contains chlorophyll. Hence
performs
photosynthesis.
The fleshy stem of the cactus plant also stores water.
Leaves have been modified into spines to reduce the loss ofwater from the plant.

E E: Leaf modification:Pitcher Plant:

The plant grows in the nitrogen deficient soil.
The pitcher like structure of the leaf contains sweet nectar that atracts the
insect and
the pitcher traps these insects to fullfill its nitrogen requirements.

Seema cut a stem of celery plant and immersed it in a red dye, as shown in the
picture given below.

What will Seema observe after a few hours? Draw it in the diagram.

What do you conclude from the above activity?

Conclusion: Stem (Xylem) helps in transporting water to different parts of the
plant

Bright sunny day

What will you observe in the glass jar after a few hours? Why?
Water droplets will be present on the inner side of the glass jar

Mention any one precaution you must take while performing this activity.
Set up should be airtight

X- Breathing roots
Y- Aerial root

How are they different from each other?

Breathing roots in mangrove plants emerge out of the water and has pores that help
the plant root to
breath.

Give other examples of plants having same type of roots as in X and Y.

X- Mangrove trees, Y- Banyan tree.
