1.1. INTRODUCTION

1.2. INDUSTRY: HEALTH INDUSTRY

The Health Industry in Ghana is a confluence of public and private services, each facing both
challenges and opportunities. While the government provides a backbone of healthcare through
its extensive network of hospitals and clinics(public), the private sector on the other hand is
growing, also offering quality healthcare services. Access to these quality healthcare services can
be quite challenging, especially in the rural areas, nonetheless, several methods and procedures
are being put in place to ensure quality healthcare services are received equally by all. However,
the healthcare industry is a captivating field where new experiences are learnt, healthcare
techniques are improved overtime and innovative technologies are constantly emerging. By
exploring and delving into the health industry, I aim to gain a deeper understanding of the
industry as a whole, find out some problems it encounters and potentially contribute to finding
possible ways to curbing those issues.

1.3. COMPANY: DR. AGARWAL’S EYE HOSPITAL

Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital is a private healthcare facility that aims to provide quality healthcare
services to everyone, specifically eye services. The eye, is a very crucial and important part of
the human body which aids humans to see. Without the eye, a person can practically do nothing
on his own. This makes the eye an important organ and must be treated and handled with care.
Though this eye hospital can be counted as one of the best eye hospitals in Ghana, it comes with
its shortcomings as well. Nonetheless, I’m eager to learn about the hospital’s operations, identify
its challenges, and explore potential solutions to address those challenges.

1.3.1 DEPARTMENT: SURGERY DEPARTMENT.

The Surgery Department at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital is the cornerstone of the hospital’s
operations, playing a very important role in delivering specialized healthcare to patients with a
wide range of eye conditions. As one of the leading eye hospitals in Ghana, this department is

very important to the hospital’s mission of preserving and restoring vision. Equipped with
advanced technologies and staffed by highly skilled surgeons, the department handles both
routine and complex surgeries, treating serious and vision-threatening conditions. Its expertise
and capability to manage high-risk procedures make it indispensable to the hospital, directly
contributing to the hospital’s success and its reputation for excellence in eye care.

1.4. DR. AGARWALS EYE HOSPITAL’S OPERATIONS, ACTIVITIES AND

RESOURCES.

The core operations of Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital revolve around providing high-quality eye
care services, some of which include:

a. Eye Care Services: this includes outpatient consultation, surgical interventions,

emergency care, pediatric ophthalmology, preventive eye care, as well as vision
rehabilitation.
b. Diagnostics: this includes eye tests and imaging and advanced screening techniques.
c. Research and Education: this includes medical research, training programs, and public
awareness campaigns as well.

Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital certainly has a variety of activities and resources that support its
operations. Such resources include:

a. The Human Resources: which include the Ophthalmologists, Nurses, Technicians,

Optometrists as well as the Administrative Staff.
b. Medical Equipment: which include surgical equipment, diagnostic tools and well as laser
technology.
c. Infrastructure: which include Outpatient Clinics, Inpatient Care, Surgical Theatres as well
as the Pharmacy.
d. Financial Resources: which include revenue streams, as well as donations or even
partnerships.

The activities in the hospital are managed by several departments and individuals as well. For
example; the finances of the hospital are managed by a certain group of people or the Accounting

Department of the hospital. The drugs are supplied and dispensed by the Pharmacists or the
Pharmaceutical department, and so on.

1.5. OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCIES OF DR. AGARWALS

EYE HOSPITAL AND ITS SURGERY DEPARTMENT.

Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital is highly effective in delivering quality eye care through efficient
operations and advanced technology. The hospital uses state-of-the-art equipment for diagnostics
and surgeries, ensuring accurate treatments and faster recovery times. With well-established
procedures, skilled Ophthalmologists, and a patient-centric approach, the hospital offers well
organized services that reduce waiting periods of the patients to be attended to and as well
enhances the patients’ experience. The surgery department operates efficiently with optimized
processes, ensuring quick surgical turnarounds without compromising safety. Regular training
for staff and a focus on quality assurance help maintain high standards of care. All in all, Dr.
Agarwal’s Eye Hospital stands out for its combination of expertise, technology, and operational
efficiency.
