SECTION-B
Short Answer Type Questions:

Fill in the blanks OR A/R Type Questions:
Q10. The potential energy of two like charges (q1q2 > 0) is ______. [1]

SECTION-C
Short Answer Type Questions:
Q11. A point charge Q is placed at point O as shown in the figure. The potential difference [2]
VA – VB is positive. Is the charge Q negative or positive?

Q12. Three points A, B and C lie in a uniform electric field (E ) of 5 × 103 N/C as shown in the figure. Find the
potential difference between points A and C. [2]

Q14. Derive an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor when a dielectric slab of dielectric
constant K and thickness t = d/2 but of same area as that of the plates is inserted between the capacitor
plates. (d = separation between the plates). What will happen if the same dielectric is fully filled between the
plates of the capacitor. [4]

SECTION-D
CASE STUDY BASED:
Q15. Electrostatic potential energy of a system of point charges is defined as the total amount of work done in
bringing the different charges to their respective positions from infinitely large mutual separations. By
definition, work done in carrying charge from  to any point is
W = Potential × Charge
This work is stored in the system of two point charges in the form of electrostatic potential energy U of the
system. Based on the above passage give the following answer.

(i) Work done in moving a charge from one point to other inside a uniformly charged conducting sphere is
(1) Always zero (2) Non-zero (3) May be zero (4) None of these [1]
(ii) A positively charged particle is released from rest in an uniform electric field. The electric potential energy
of the charge [1]
(1) Remains a constant because the electric field is uniform
(2) Increases because the charge moves along the electric field
(3) Decreases because the charge moves along the electric field
(4) Decreases because the charge moves opposite to the electric field
(iii) Three charges are placed at the vertex of an equilateral triangle of side l as shown in figure. For what
value of Q, the electrostatic potential energy of the system is zero? [1]

(1) –q (2) q/2 (3) –-2q (4) –q/2

(iv) In the figure shown below, a proton moves a distance d in a uniform electric field E as shown. The work
done on the proton by electric field is [1]

(1) Negative (2) Positive (3) Zero (4) None of above

(v) Two positive point charges each of 1 C have been kept in air at 1 m distance from each other. What will
be the potential energy of the system? [1]
(1) 1 J (2) 1 eV (3) 9 × 10–3 J (4) Zero
Long Answer Type Question:
Q16. (a) Define an equipotential surface. Draw equipotential surfaces [5]
(i) In case of a single point charge and
(ii) In case of a constant electric field in Z-direction. Why the equipotential surfaces about a single charge
are not equidistant?

(3)

(b) Can an electric field exist tangential to an equipotential surface? Give reason.
OR
Three concentric metallic shells A, B and C of radii a, b and c (a > b > c) have surface charge densities +, –
 and +  respectively as shown in the figure. If shells A and C are at the same potential, then obtain the
relation between the raii a, b and c.
