However, there are certain aspects that the user must be aware. This saction addresses those areas. Procedure For Setting and Aligning ‘The folowing points deserve epeciat attention during the setting and alignment of the com, pressor: 1 3196 The skid design should ‘Transmit compressor and criver reaction forces tothe foundation Insure that there isa proper mismatch between the shaking forces and the natu ral requeney of the skis Have sufficient stfiness and strength so thatthe compressor can be maurted flat with no bending or twisting ofthe compressor frame, crosshead guides jinder. This can be accomplished by shims or carelul grouting Have enough siffness and mass to resist vibration induced by the unbalanced ‘couples as specified in the Ariel Application Data Book The feat on the crosshead guides must be supported in @ fashion that not only provides vertical suppor but also prevents horizontal movement perpendicular to the piston rod, {ter the frame is mounted and the mounting batts tightened, the distance from the crosshead guide supports to their respective skié supports is to be shimmed. This work must bo performed prior to the adction of botles and piping, In addi- tion, the eroeshoad guide supports must be capable of carrying the combinod weight of the cylinders, baties and piping. Page 2-1 For MODELS: JGW, JGR ano JG ‘SECTION 2 - INSTALLATION Setting The following procedure isto be used for sting the compressor on the skid Ate finding the approximate postion of the compressor frame, the mounting bolts are to be tightened in place and then loosened, Shims are then fo be adjusted so there is no move~ ment more than a variation of 0.002 inches between the bottom of the frame and the skid Supports, With the frame again bolted into piace and the crosshead guide supports free, the distance from the crosshead quide supporis to their respective skid supports is to be shimmed before tightening the crosshead guide mounting bolts. Consult Packager infor- ‘ation for mounting bot tightening torque values. Alignment per alignment is necessary for satisfactory performance. A flexible couping, wil nt make up for poor alignment. Misalignment can resuit i. ‘+ High bending mement on the crankshaft © Large axial forces ‘+ Excessive weer to the bearings ‘+ And if severe, probable damage to various companents An Ariel compressor may be aligned by any of a number of acceptable methods such as: ‘+ Facelperipheral * Reverse indicator Across the dist pack + Optical + Laser + Mechani direct to computer \When aligning @ unit some procedural concers are: Soft foot (compressor and driver ere not laying Nat) © Repeatable readings + Which way ingicstor moves (plus or minus) + Thermal grown + Indicator seg \When properly lignes the forces on the connected equipment will be at a minimum. This will result in long bearing life ané a smooth running unit. Consult Packager's information for alignment requirements. Depending ‘upon your climate and insect population it cen be necessary to install screens over he vents ‘and drains to assure that they do not become blocked. This can be essential i the compres. ‘sor shutdown fora long period of time, Some other points are 1. A vent should be provided to safely relieve pressure from the system. 2. Adequate vents and drains are to be provided forthe distance pieces, primary packing vents and crankcase. Primary vents and cains must be dependently \enied from the secondary vents and drains. All vents and drains must be installed in such @ manner as to prevent the collection of liquids Hist could cause the build up of elther gas or liquid. This section seas with the lubrication and venting. Proper lubricaton is dependent upon a number of steps, with e2ch one being cial to the ‘overall operation. The lubrication system ofthe JGW. JGR or JGJ Compressor is described in detail inthis section and must be fully understood by the operator. Lubrication Lubrication is so vita for successful operation that it deserves special attention inthe pack- ‘age design, For frame and cylinders with pipeline quality gas, Avie recommends any good ‘mineral ol which provides resistance to oxidation and corrosion as well as adequate IUbrica- tion and heat removal. No‘mally, te oll used in the engine system will be satistactory. SAE 40 weight is recommended for normal operation. ‘The folowing tems require special altention’ 1. The maximum viscosty ofthe lube oil for cold weather starting is 19,000 SS. This is about 40° F for SAE 30 weiaht oll and 5° F for SAE 40 weight ol, SAE 20 weight oll may not be used, 2. Synthatio als are available which meet the viscosity requirements of SAE 40 \welght. However, because they contain ro wax erysials, they have pour points fs low as -86" F. These may be used upon approval of the Ariel Engineering Department 3. Ifthe gas being compressed has “ell washing” characterislics, such as lerge amounts of water, of heavy hydrocerbons, consideration should be given tising eyindar ols that resist the washing action of the gas. 4. Allcompressors must have an oil cooler. Maximum ellowable ol temperature into the compressor frame is 190° F. The packager is responsible for selecing & proper oil coaler or determining whether or nt the optional cooler available from Ariel is sufficient when the cooling medium temperaiure and flow is considered Heat loads for each frame are shown in ihe Application Data Book. The cooler should be mounted as close as possible to the compressor with piping of ade uate size to minimize pressure drop, 5 fz compressor is exposed to cold weather, the oil system must be designed so the unit may be safely steted with adequate oil low fo the main bearings. Tem. perature contvoled cooler by-pass valves, ol heaters, cooler louvers and even buildings may be neesied fo obtain successful operation, lectrc motor diven machines must have a prelube pump to ensure at least 10 398 PAGE 4-1 For Movets: JGW, JGR Aub JGJ SECTION 4 ~ LUBRICATION AND VENTING psig oil prossure before starting. Valves and baseplate segments are normally supplied with Buna-N O-rings, Check valves are installed on the outlet ofthe disrution block and at the inet of all be points, Valve blocks containing metering pistons discharge a predetermined amount of lubricant with each cycle. Valve blocks can be single or twin and can be externally singled or cross~ ported. Outlets not to be used when singling or crossperting must be plugged, A by-pass block can be used in any position on the baseplate. The use of a by-pass block allows the addition or deletion of lubrication points witheut disturbing existing tubing. Both butlets under a by-pass block must be plugged. ‘The valve blocks and by-pass blocks are fastened to @ baseplate mounted on the machine tobe lubricated.
