ABSTRACT

This is especially emphasized in analyzing and designing of the heat

exchanger network tree to reduce the energy consumption. At the same time, the
optimization method of the cost and energy to obtain effective operating conditions
are also important. In this research, pinch technology used for energy analysis is
presented to obtain the optimal heat exchanger network for Petrochemical Complex
(Mann). The heat exchanger number, heat exchanger area, the energy usages, the
utilities uses, operating cost and fixed capital cost changed with temperature
difference are mainly studied. The designing method: mass flow rate inequality rule,
stream splitting and cyclic matching described in their concerned chapter with
required charts and graphs. The data gathering of hot and cold streams in the
preheating train of crude oil distillation unit of Petrochemical Complex (Mann) has
been done by means of practical approaches and their design manuals and operating
manuals. After collecting the required data, HINT software is applied to analyze the
existing heat exchanger network (HEN). By using this software, the energy leakages
of the system are defined and then calculate the proposed HEN designs at the four
minimum temperature difference approaches: 10 K, 20 K, 30 K and 40 K. Some
important results to improve the existing HEN are obtained. The results of minimum
temperature difference 40 K are liable to recreate the existing HEN with newer one.
The crossing enthalpy of the existing HEN can be eliminated by adding a few heat
exchangers. The area of the new HEN network is about 913 m2 and then the
annualized fixed capital cost and the operating cost save about 848492 $ per year.
