Be shepherds over the flock God has entrusted to you. Watch over it as God does: Dont do this because you have to, but because you want to.
Dont do it out of greed, but out of a desire to serve. Dont be rulers over the people entrusted to you, but be examples for the flock to follow.

You are about to lead your church on a journey of spiritual transformation. We call it a spiritual growth campaign, but it is so much more. These six weeks are the beginning of a completely different way of doing church. When your church members grasp the reality of living by Gods principles rather than their own desires, and when they start putting these principle into action in their day-to-day lives, your church will change forever. The impact the campaign will make on your congregation depends on you and your leadership. Dont worry. No one expects you to make the campaign a success. In fact, trying to do it all yourself will diminish the impact, not enhance it. However, you play a crucial role no one else can fill. For the campaign to be more than several activity-filled weeks, you must catch the vision, dream big dreams, turn people loose to serve, and take the lead.

Power of Alignment
Through weekend services, small group studies, and reading a chapter of the devotional book each day, your entire church family will focus on the same spiritual themes for the same period of time. Imagine for a moment the impact on your church when each person lives out the principles they will read about. This impact grows as those individuals live in powerful community with their small group, and reaches its peak when those small groups come together to experience the power of the principles as an entire congregation! We call this the Power of Alignment. This concentrated time of alignment will bear lasting, eternal fruit in all levels of your church.
Each Person
Small Groups
Multiple Reinforcements
When people hear about Gods purposes for their lives over and over, they are more likely to live out the commitments they make. The campaign uses multiple venues and approaches to say the same thing. Each week the theme will be communicated in four ways: Through the weekend services Through reading the devotional book Through Scripture memorization Through small group lessons Through these multiple reinforcements, the truth of God sinks deeper into the heart. As it does, real life change results. But dont just take our word for it. Catch the vision and experience Gods transforming power for yourself by reading the devotional book. Take a small group of leaders in your church through the book and watch what God does in their lives as well.
As individuals live in powerful community with others in their small group, the impact grows. Then it reaches its peak when those small groups come together to experience the power of the principles as an entire congregation!

God commands us to dream big dreams. Ephesians 3:20 tells us God is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope (NLT). The best gift you can give your church in the days leading up to the campaign is to dream dreams that are bigger than anything you and your church can do on your own. We call this exponential thinking. Exponential thinking is setting goals so big, so far beyond anything youve ever attempted before, that God has to take over or you will fail. If you can figure out a way to reach your goals on your own, you arent thinking exponentially. Exercising this kind of faith has caused thousands of churches to explode with new life and growth. Exponential thinking will take your church beyond the realm of what weve always done to a place of attempting things for God youve never thought to ask for before.
[
4
LORD, I have heard the news about you; I am amazed at what you have done. LORD, do great things once again in our time; make those things happen again in our own days . . .
God-sized dreams begin with prayer. Ask God what he wants to accomplish in your church during the campaign. Let this campaign stretch your faith, the faith of your leaders, and the faith of your members. Let it challenge your creativity and strengthen your dependency upon God. Remember, we cannot dream dreams greater than our God.
We took Rick Warren seriously at our first team meeting to think exponentially, and felt God telling us to shoot for eighty small groups. (We didnt even have eighty adults in worship on a Sunday morning). We ended up with an astounding forty groups. Many of our leaders are leading two or three groupsone at church, another as an outreach to their neighbors. I ordered materials for 350 people, and even though we didnt have any of this budgeted, God was faithful to us and all our expenses were more than paid for as we put our faith on the line to advance his kingdom here in Santa Cruz. For sure our community needs to know the truth of the only God who can save them, and give their lives purpose.
Choose a Weekend Services Coordinator: This is one other role that you may be tempted to fill yourself. If you as the Pastor plan to be the Weekend Services Coordinator because you generally plan all your services now, this is an excellent opportunity to encourage others to help plan the campaign services. One benefit is that you might discover others who can assist in planning your regular worship services in the future.
IMPORTANT NEXT STEP After reading this Pastors Success Guide, it is important to read through the Campaign Directors Success Guide and the Weekend Services Success Guide as well, so you can understand the scope of the roles and recruit the right people.
Your team is responsible for planning these services in the most exciting and creative way possible to further inspire and equip people to apply the spiritual lessons in their personal lives and relationships.

The campaign you are about to launch has the potential to radically change your church forever. Your spiritual leadership means more than ever before. With so much weight resting on your shoulders, you want to know, What am I supposed to do now? Dont worry. Everything you need to know to successfully lead your church through this campaign can be found in these campaign materials. We did not include all of the nuts and bolts of the campaign in the Pastors Success Guide. You will find these in the Campaign Directors Success Guide. Although you will not serve as the Campaign Director, you need to read the guide to understand everything that will take place during the campaign. Even though we tried to be thorough, we couldnt fit the most important resource into this manualprayer. Pray early and often. Cover every step in prayer. As you do, you will see God do more than you could ever hope for!
STEP 1
10
Get Oriented
Get acquainted with the campaign materials so that you know what you have in your toolkit. There is a lot to absorb, so here is a suggested pathway for getting oriented.
Read the Success Guides for the Pastor and the Campaign Director:
This Pastors Success Guide tells you how to lead the campaign, and gives you a step-by-step timeline for your responsibilities. It is also important to read the Campaign Directors Success Guide so you can work effectively with the Campaign Director and provide guidance when needed.
STEP 2
Who to Ask
The Campaign Director manages, supports, and leads the Campaign Coordinators, and gives direction to the entire campaign. He or she will also oversee and implement the action plan, work with you to cast the vision for the campaign, and help recruit the rest of the Campaign Coordinators Team. As you prayerfully search for the right person, look for someone with the following character qualities: An authentic, growing walk with the Lord Strategic thinking with strong project management skills Well-respected in the church Leadership skills Willingness to give the necessary time to this campaign Able to work effectively with the Pastor Once the Campaign Director is selected and committed to the vision, work together to recruit the Prayer Coordinator, Groups Coordinator, Special Events Coordinator, and Communications Coordinator. If you are able to, add a Weekend Services Coordinator so that you dont have to carry that responsibility during the campaign. Begin meeting together about three months prior to the campaign Kickoff. Additional information on building the Campaign Coordinators Team is included in the Campaign Directors Success Guide.
11
STEP 3
12
Well ahead of your campaign, schedule a Vision Meeting with your key leaders to share your vision for the campaign and to prepare them to adjust their ministry schedules to clear the path for the campaign. Invite not only those with formal ministry roles in your church, but those who are influencers or behind-the-scenes servants who hold the respect of people in your church. It is important to include as many leaders and influencers as you can in this early meeting, in order to help them feel a part of this vision and take ownership of the campaign for themselves.
4. Conduct this group exercise. To-Do Item 1: Discuss Consider these questions together: What is your biggest, God-sized dream for your area of ministry? What does God want to accomplish that you have no idea how to pull off? Which areas of ministry are most susceptible to the doubt and unbelief that blocks exponential growth? What is your greatest fear that stands in the way of thinking exponentially?
Hearing from regular people who have tested the principles of Scripture and found them to work is the best way to put flesh and blood on a biblical principle.
13
To-Do Item 2: Pray After discussing these questions, pray together. Use the exponential thinking Scriptures as a guide (see Appendix A). Ask God to ignite your imaginations and give you God-sized goals for every area of ministry. Confess your doubts and ask God to change your hearts. Ask him to release his power within the campaign and to use it in the life of your church in ways you could never imagine. To-Do Item 3: Set Goals and Share After discussing the leadership teams God-sized dreams, put exponential thinking into action. Set goals for the campaign. Then ask everyone to help enthusiastically share the goals and vision with the entire church.
Remember, when you are brainstorming, there are no bad ideas. Allow your team to think outside the box.
14
STEP 4
Working toward these goals will demand everyones full attention. This is only possible if you clear the calendar in each area of ministry so that everyone can work together. Dont think of this as a negative. Once your leaders catch the vision for all God can do through this campaign, it will make more sense why this must be your churchs priority during the weeks of the campaign. During your Vision Meeting, ask your ministry leaders for a commitment to clear their calendars, then schedule follow-up meetings with individuals to further clarify how to suspend their particular program. This is an important part of the preparation process that cannot be rushed or steamrolled, so do not try to work out the details of each ministrys schedule at the Vision Meeting. Here are some common areas of concern when it comes to suspending programs during the campaign: Adult Sunday school: The small group materials work best in home groups which meet at different times and locations throughout the week. However, we realize some church members feel more comfortable meeting at the church in a Sunday school setting. Give your teachers the themes of the small group lessons, and ask them to teach on that topic themselves. That way, people who are in both a Sunday school class and a small group will deepen their learning by hearing two different perspectives on the materialthe perspective of their teacher, and that of Rick Warren on video.
15
Sunday evening services: Suspending Sunday evening services encourages more people to be involved in small groups. If you do keep your Sunday evening services, make sure your sermons reinforce the theme of the week. Wednesday night services: Here again, small groups could take the place of your midweek services. If some people want to continue meeting at church, suggest they have a time of prayer for the campaign each week, and provide them with specific prayer requests. Retreats: Postpone them or embrace them. Consider moving the retreat to a time a few months after the campaign. If that is not possible, select a theme that reinforces what they would be doing that weekend at church. Seasonal musical productions: Do not try to do your annual concert right after the campaign. The intense rehearsal schedule would prevent musicians from experiencing the full impact of the campaign. Consider an alternative, such as bringing in a guest soloist. Remember, this is not a permanent change. Support groups such as Celebrate Recovery: Your support groups can keep meeting. Encourage them to extend their regular agenda and do the campaign study together too.
Rick Warren says in his book The Purpose Driven Church, A bloated church calendar diffuses the energy of your church. If you try to do the campaign on top of an already full church calendar, you will dilute the potential impact of the campaign.
16
STEP 5
Throughout the campaign, you will introduce and reinforce each of Gods five eternal purposes through the weekend services. To help you as you plan the services and prepare your sermons, weve compiled the following resources: 1. Transcripts of Rick Warrens sermons. Campaign Central contains sermon transcripts for all the messages of the campaign. NOTE about preaching Ricks sermons: You do not have to preach Ricks sermons word-for-word. Most pastors prefer taking the principles from these sermons and adapting them to their own unique place of ministry. The message needs to be your own. You are sharing timeless principles that come straight from Gods Word. Adapting a sermon written by someone else does not mean you have to water down your passion for the message any more than using a commentary waters down your passion for Gods Word. The author of the Word remains unchanged. God gave these truths for everyone to use, so share your message with enthusiasm!
17
Since Pastor Ricks preaching style may be quite different from your own, you may have some hesitancy in using this resource. Keep in mind the following: Preaching style: If you are more accustomed to expository preaching, consider trying a different approach. It might bring fresh focus to the messages of the campaign and give you a fresh look when you return to your own preaching style after the campaign. Using a variety of Bible translations: No single translation captures the full sense of every verse of the Bible. They all have strengths and weaknesses. The sermons use a variety of translations, which affirms people who enjoy a particular translation and encourages further exploration of the rich nuances of biblical texts. 2. Sermon outline notes. Sermon outline notes for use in your weekly bulletin are available on Campaign Central. This allows the congregation to follow along with the sermon, further reinforcing the weekly themes. Some benefits of using outline notes: The congregation can focus on the message and interact by completing the outline They keep everyone on the same page (literally!) by reiterating the spoken word, and by printing the Scripture references They reinforce the message with a printed outline to clarify meanings and distill the message to its essence. People are more likely to remember the message if it is concise, repeated, and communicated using more than one medium.
18
3. PowerPoint slides. PowerPoint slides for all of the campaign sermons are available on Campaign Central.
19
Another Idea: Invite a group of people who dont attend your church to your group. Pastor Lance Witt at Saddleback Church did this during 40 Days of Purpose, and years later his neighborhood group is still together and has seen almost all of the original members make commitments to Christ and get baptized.
Tip #2. Personal Daily Devotions: It should be apparent that you are participating in reading the devotional along with everyone else. Quote from it occasionally, and build the value for the principles it teaches by viewing it as the key to the alignment of your entire church with the principles of the campaign.
When to start reading: Every person in your church should begin the first devotional reading from the book at the same time, on the Sunday you preach the Week 1 message.
Tip #3. Ask your people to commit to the campaign. If there is ever a time to use your God-given authority in a way that urges people to spiritual growth, this is it. Challenge your flock to jump into the campaign with both feet and commit themselves to the principles and the heart of the campaign.
20
A variety of elements combine to form the entire service experience, and that is why you need each individual on your team. Encouraging one anothers gifts will result in an experience of community that will impact others.
21
STEP 6
22
Look Ahead
Dont waste the opportunities that this campaign gives you to take your congregation to the next level of health and maturity. Your church may experience incredible exponential growth. Begin putting the structures, support systems, and people in place now to take advantage of the changes that are about to impact your church. Many pastors have bemoaned the fact that we didnt warn them about this. They were caught off-guard by the positive growth, and they were unprepared to keep it going. Pray and plan for the possibilities, and think together with your church leadership about some of the following areas of potential: Increase in small groups: This is the most common impact. Have more curriculum ready to offer after the campaign. Recruit Community Leaders who can stay on board for a few months after the campaign to help keep clusters of new groups going. Prepare to circle back around with small group hosts that want to continue leading groups, to train them, and disciple them. (See the Small Groups Success Guide for more information about Community Leaders.) Higher attendance: Consider any potential facility and personnel needs for your worship services and age-related ministries. More visitors: Put a method in place for tracking visitors. Become more visitor-friendly by having greeters, extra ushers, and directional signs in your buildings.
Salvation decisions and baptisms: Train more people for counseling those who are considering following Christ. More volunteers for ministries: Conduct classes on spiritual gifts, and prepare to help the new volunteers from the Ministry Fair find places of service that fit their gifts and interests. Questions about church membership: Prepare written materials describing your church and its membership process. Prepare to conduct additional membership classes, or begin them if you have not conducted them previously. Possible increase in giving: Prepare to answer questions regarding stewardship, tithing, and other questions related to giving. Prepare also to inform church members regarding how their monetary gifts are being used. Counseling for those who are hurting: Since the campaign addresses one of lifes most basic questions, dont be surprised when people who have struggled with the answer need more help than the campaign alone can offer.

C A M PA I G N O V E RV I E W TIMELINE
Here is the overview of the major tasks of the campaign and how they fit together. There are three phases to the campaign: the preparation phase, the campaign phase, and the Day 41 phase. The three-month preparation phase is when the campaign team is assembled and the planning and promotion of the campaign takes place. The week before your campaign launch there is a precampaign service that includes a Day of Prayer, then a Kickoff event the day before your launch, and the campaign officially starts with your Week 1 service. The campaign phase goes for seven weekends, then youre on to Day 41, which is the pathway your church sets for the months following the campaign.

APPENDIX A
10 Biblical Principles of Exponential Thinking
1. Exponential growth is possible Thus Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen. There they acquired property, were fertile, and increased greatly. (Genesis 47:27 NAB) 2. Exponential growth is the New Testament model And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly. (Acts 6:7 KJV) 3. Exponential growth brings honor to God LORD, you multiplied the number of your people; you multiplied them and brought honor to yourself. (Isaiah 26:15 NCV) 4. Exponential growth captures the attention of the
unbelieving world But the more the Egyptians oppressed them, the more quickly the Israelites multiplied! The Egyptians soon became alarmed. (Exodus 1:12 NLT) 5. Exponential growth is caused by God The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. (Deuteronomy 1:10 NASB)
29
6. Exponential growth is the result of Gods blessing Ponder Abraham, your father, and Sarah, who bore you. Think of it! One solitary man when I called him, but once I blessed him, he multiplied. (Isaiah 51:2 MSG) 7. Exponential growth makes God smile Well done! the king exclaimed. You are a trustworthy servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward. (Luke 19:17 NLT) 8. Exponential growth is blocked by unbelief They still didnt understand the significance of the miracle of the multiplied loaves, for their hearts were hard and they did not believe. (Mark 6:52 NLT) 9. Exponential growth is believing God for big things According to your faith will it be done to you. (Matthew 9:29 NIV) When a believing person prays, great things happen. ( James 5:16 NCV) 10. Exponential growth begins with exponential thinking Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left. (Isaiah 54:23 NIV) Lord, I have heard the news about you; I am amazed at what you have done. LORD, do great things once again in our time; make those things happen again in our own days. (Habakkuk 3:2 NCV)
