Structural Failure
Analysis, Causes and Prevention 26-27 October 2023
Online Workshop
OVERVIEW
Structural failure often results from a combination of multiple causes rather than a single factor. Understanding these causes and
implementing appropriate preventive measures, such as robust design practices, quality control procedures, regular inspections, and
adherence to safety codes and standards, can help mitigate the risk of structural failures.
When a structural failure occurs, it is crucial to investigate the causes to prevent similar incidents in the future and to inform future
designs and construction practices. Failure analysis and forensic engineering techniques are employed to understand the failure
mechanisms, identify contributing factors, and propose remedial measures to enhance structural safety.
The causes of these failures are multifarious, these include but are not limited to: inadequate or erroneous design, such as incorrect
calculations, inadequate consideration of loads and stresses, or mistakes in material selection, substandard or flawed materials,
insufficient strength or durability, or erroneous material standards, mistakes made during the construction phase, such as subpar
workmanship, inappropriate installation, insufficient supervision, or a failure to adhere to design specifications, these and many other
topical issues will be addressed and deliberated.

Course Facilitator: Professor Mitch Gohnert
Professor Mitch Gohnert graduated from Brigham Young University, USA, with a BSc in civil engineering and a Masters of
Engineering Management in 1985 and 1987, respectively. In 1995, he was awarded a PhD in civil engineering from Wits
University. He is registered as a Professional Engineer in South Africa and a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom. Early in
his career, Professor Gohnert worked for several engineering consulting firms in the USA and South Africa, including LTA and
Murray and Roberts. In 1990, he joined the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is currently a full professor in
structural engineering and former Head of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
