Science worksheet class 4th

States of Matter Balloon Science Experiment

In this fun and easy science experiment, we’re going to use a balloon to investigate if a solid plus a liquid can
equal a gas?

Materials:
 Balloon
 Baking Soda
 Vinegar
 Clean and dry bottle (Glass or plastic)
 Small funnel

Instructions:
1. Using the funnel, add two tablespoons of baking soda to the balloon.
2. Now pour four ounces of vinegar into the bottle.
3. Put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle. Two people make this job easier as one can hold the bottle steady
while the other puts the balloon onto the bottle.
4. Now lift the balloon and allow the baking soda to fall into the vinegar.
5. Observe the chemical reaction and the effect on the balloon.

How it Works:
When baking soda (solid) and vinegar (liquid) are combined, an endothermic Chemical reaction occurs. This
chemical reaction creates carbon dioxide (gas).Since the balloon is stretched over the mouth of the bottle, the
carbon dioxide Gas cannot escape. The carbon dioxide gas creates pressure in the bottle and inflates the balloon.
