EXPANSION OF BRITISH IN INDIA - I


CARNATIC WARS
First War (1746-48)
REASON : The War of Austrian Succession.
COURSE : Carnatic Nawab army defeated by French (Dupleix) (Battle of adyar)
• Afterwards, the French besieged Madras.
RESULT : Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748)

Second War (AD 1749-54)


REASON : The War of Succession in carnatic and Hydrabad .
COURSE : French - Muzaffar Jung(Hyderabad) & Chanda Sahib(Carnatic).
British – Nazir Jung(Hyderabad) & Anwarudin(carnatic)
• After initial victory of the French, Robert Clive emerged victorious.
• The Siege of Arcot (1751) made Clive a national hero in England.
RESULT : Treaty of Pondicherry

Third War (AD 1758-63)


REASON : 7 Years war in Europe
COURSE : French Governor Count de Lally captured Fort St David.
• Battle Of Wandiwash (1760) - French were defeated by British.
RESULT : Treaty of Paris.
• Pondicherry was returned to France by British with conditions
Anglo-Mysore Wars
First War (1766-69)
REASON : Growth and threat of Haider Ali
COURSE : British+Maratha+NIZAM Vs Haider Ali
• HaiderAli defeated the British,
RESULT : Treaty of Madras (1769)

Second War (1780-84)


REASON : Mutual distrust
COURSE : Hyder Ali+Maratha+NIZAM Vs British
• Warren Hastings attacked French port Mahe (Haider Ali’s territory).
• Haider Ali captured Arcot.
• In 1781, Haider Ali was defeated at Porto Novo by Eyre Coote.
RESULT : Treaty of Mangalore (1784)

Third War (1789-92)


REASON : Growth of Tipu
COURSE : British+Maratha+NIZAM Vs Tipu Lord Cornwallis captured Bangalore.
RESULT : Treaty of Sri Rangapattinam
• Tipu ceded half of his territories + 3 crore war compensation
Fourth War (1799)
REASON : Revenge For Mangalore pact
COURSE : Lord Wellesley attacked Sri Rangapattinam and captured it.
RESULT : Tipu died while fighting.(1799)
* Family members were interned to Vellore.
* It placed England on the military supremacy in India.
* Tipu used the iron cased rockets in the 3rd and 4th Anglo- Mysore Wars.

Anglo-Maratha Wars
First War (1775-82)
REASON : British intervention on internal matters of marathas
COURSE : English favoured Raghunath Rao to become the Peshwa
• but were defeated (Convention of Wadgaon).
RESULT : Treaty of Salbai
Second War (1803-05)
REASON : The Peshwas signed the Treaty of Bassein (1802),
which was a treaty for subsidiary alliances.
COURSE : scindia+bhonsle Vs British → british won
Holkar → british lost
RESULT : Treaty of Rajghat

Third War (1817-18)


REASON : strugles to revive maratha power
COURSE : scindia+bhonsle+holkar (lead by peshwa) vs british → british won
Lord Hastings moved against Marathas and Marathas were decisively defeated.
RESULT : Satara govt formed
