The Trainee Drilling Engineer (TDE) should achieve a good understanding of the roles and
responsibilities of Derrickman during drilling, testing and completion operations.
By working alongside the experienced personnel in role of Derrickman in performing their
routine tasks, the TDE will develop a practical knowledge base. The achievement of full
autonomous competence in the Derrickman Position will require a high level of physical
application. It is expected that the TDE will gain a solid understanding of the role.

The TDE must have successfully completed Roustabout and Floorman modules and have had
these signed off by their Coach.
THEORIETICAL KNOWLEDGE
It can be expected that the TDE will have some basic knowledge of the roles and responsibilities
of Derrickman prior to commencement of this position. Further reading and study will be
completed by TDEs on an on-going basis, to include:

1. Safety Induction at respective site

2. MPCL Life Saving Rules (SAFER MPCL)
3. MPCL Unsafe Act (UA) and Unsafe Condition (UC) Reporting
4. MPCL Permit to Work System
5. MPCL Line of Fire Safety
The TDE should develop their understanding of preventative maintenance in relation to the
equipment that the derrickman is responsible for, such as mud pumps and valves.

At the end of their Derrickman training module, the assessment form will be filled and signed by
respective TDE and Wellsite Leader.

ON THE JOB TRAINING

The TDE will "learn by doing". It is expected that the Wellsite Leader, the TDE and all work parties
will take necessary steps to ensure no one is placed into dangerous or uncomfortable situations.

THE TDEs will initially stand back and observe operation until they feel confident enough to
perform the duties at hand. Should unsafe acts or unsafe condition develop, the job must be
stopped and a stand down meeting be held before resuming operation safely. It is expected that

TDE will successfully integrate into working team roles, contributing to the success of the
operation in which they are placed.
TDEs should be encouraged to use knowledge gained in training to influence safe operations
and challenge unsafe practices. They should identify themselves at safety meetings/toolbox
talks, ask questions if unsure of tasks and should be empowered to use Stop Work Authority.
The TDEs should set a good example to the crews they are working with.
