Now, I will be discussing the Case Study 3 to answer
the question, “Did Rizal retract?”
So... decades have passed and it is still one of the most arguable issue in the
Philippine History. It is said to be a debate torn between facts and fallacious. Did
Rizal really retract and goes against his own words, or, did he not?
Rizal's allegedly retraction was said to be true given the proofs and testimonies of
the witnesses.
These witnesses were said to be present and come across the exact moment where
Rizal signed his retraction, said his biblical vows and offered his promises.
Nick Joaquin, Nicolas Zafra and Gregorio Zaide are three of the witnesses of this
very scenario.
Although proofs and evidences were laid, there were still countless people who
believe that Rizal, the national hero, could not and never would have done this
certain act of withdrawal.
Senator Rafael Palma and Marciano Guzman are two of these people.
They believed that it was all planned for the purpose of bringing back the
Catholicism in the Philippines. The signed retraction was never presented, stating
it was long lost, a powerful urge, indeed, for people to doubt.
Of course, the mass will never believe a proofless claim.
This debate about Rizal's retraction has been ongoing for years. People argued that
it was legitimate, some attest that it was inauthentic. For years, the tranquility has
not yet been achieved regarding with this issue.
At the end of the day, we could never change the history. It is up to us whether
what claim are we going to believe.
