Read the story and answer the questions that follow.

Nkosi Johnson – A young leader

Daphne, Nkosi’s mother, had AIDS. When he was born in 1989, Nkosi was already HIV positive. After
Nkosi’s mother died, a woman called Gail Johnson adopted him. She cared for him and loved him as if
he were her own child. She taught Nkosi to love himself. She told him that, even with AIDS he could
do all the things that other children could do.

When Nkosi was seven, Gail took him to school. The parents and teachers were not happy to have an
HIV positive child in their school. But Gail and Nkosi were very strong. They said you are not allowed
to discriminate against someone who is HIV positive. All the children learnt that he was just like any
other child. He became their friend. Even though he often got sick, Nkosi always had a smile on his
face. He was a fighter and he never gave up.

In 2001 when Nkosi was eleven years old, an international conference was held in Durban. Nkosi
stood on stage and talked to thousands of people about ways to help people who are HIV positive. His
speech was shown on television across the world. Very soon after, Nkosi died he was just twelve years
old.

In 2002 Nkosi was given two international awards for being a world hero. Gail accepted the awards on
Nkosi’s behalf. Nkosi fought for the rights of children with AIDS. He helped people to stop
discriminating against people with HIV/AIDS. Today, the house where Nkosi lived and died is called
Nkosi’s Haven. It is a home for children with AIDS.
