Technical Advantages of HANSHIN’s EO Gas Sterilizers

Sterilization System
▣
User can select a proper cycle program for an optimum performance of sterilization among 4 kinds of basic cycle programs
comprised of high(56℃) and low(38℃) temperature cycle and change the parameters of basic cycle programs at user’s
pleasure according to the material to be sterilized or sterilization condition. Therefore the sterilization is effective and convenient.
These sterilizers use 3 kinds of EO gas mixture as sterilant that the inert gases, the freon and the carbon dioxide(CO2) gases,
are mixed with Ethylene Oxide respectively, thus user can select the sterilant widely and easily.

▣
The aeration cycle is a practical cycle for the items required the additional aeration even though aerated in the basic or user’s
cycle, and the items processed in the sterilizer without aeration function.

▣
The sterilization temperature in the chamber is sustained using the jacket water heated by the built-in heater and the jacket water is
circulated by the pump for maintaining the temperature distribution uniformly, hence the effectiveness of sterilization is excellent.

Control System
▣
The controller with a microprocessor carries on a sterilization cycle automatically and controls LCD displaying, self diagnosis
function, printing the record. Especially the devices with these functions are integrated as a compact component and the
controller can be changed with a normal one rapidly and easily when a trouble has occurred in the controller. This allows user
to operate and maintain the sterilizer efficiently and conveniently.

The self-diagnosis program detects the operation errors during progressing a cycle and generates an warning alarm
automatically. The cycle in progress is aborted automatically when before discharging gas into the chamber and the sterilizer
returns to the initial state if you press the <START/STOP> key (press the <STOP> button for the touch screen type). But when
after discharging gas into the chamber, the cycle in progress is aborted and the gas in the chamber is exhausted automatically
through the vent and aerate phase and the cycle is completed safely. The aeration phase can be stopped during execution
using the <START/STOP> key (using the <STOP> button for the touch screen type).

The precise humidity control is the important requirement because the sterilizing effect is reduced if the humidity is insufficient in
the chamber. The humidity is formed (40~80%RH) by the steam introduced in the chamber, that the steam is generated in the
vaporizer using water injected from the outside.

▣
If the electric power has suddenly cut off during progressing a cycle, the cycle is retained at the stopped process and is
progressed from that process when the electric power has restored. This is possible that the controller stores the cycle
informations at the stopped process during power failure and is an outstanding function for maintaining the continuity of a cycle
in progress.

 Vacuum System

▣
The vacuum pump installed in the sterilizer is different in the sterilizer model respectively as the waterring type (HS-
700EO/5025EO, HG-5025EOT) and the diaphragm type (HS-4085EO/3241EO), and all the pumps have excellent operating
performance such as the powerful exhaust capability, durability, airtightness, full oilless operation and low noise etc.

The vacuum leak test is to check whether the chamber is leaking or not and user should carry on this test once everyday
before sterilizing. If the test result is failed, user must stop operation of the sterilizer and repair after investigating the cause
thoroughly because the gas in the chamber is leaked out to the outside and it may cause human injury and an
environmental contamination.

Ventilation System

▣
The gas in the chamber is exhausted during the vent and aeration process to the outside of building through the ventilation
duct generally, but the EO gas sterilizers of HANSHIN are designed to drain the residual gas mixed with water to the prepared
drainage for the safety of user and for protecting environment. The ethylene oxide is dissolved completely in the 10℃ water.

These sterilizers are equipped with a bacteria retentive high efficiency air filter that is able to filter the particles greater than
0.3㎛ at least 99.999% and the highly filtered air can be introduced into the chamber during the vent and aeration process,
this prevents the sterilized items from recontamination by the air-borne bacteria in the chamber.

▣
When changing an exhausted gas cylinder, the residual gases in the piping or pressure regulator are removed automatically by
operation of the control program for protecting the user’s health and preventing environment of workplace from contamination.

Sterilization Process Checking System

▣
Turning on the power, the exposure temperature and time, the aeration time, the actual chamber pressure and the door state are
displayed on the large graphic or touch screen type LCD monitor. During progressing a cycle, the cycle phase (HEAT,
CONDITION, CHARGE, STERILIZE, VENT, AERATE, COMPLETION) in progress is displayed in order, the executing process
(INITIAL, WAITING, VACUUM, GAS IN, AIR IN, WATER IN, LEAK TEST, GAS VENT) and the current time, the number of cycle
times, the kind of gas, the error code are displayed in real time. This allows user to monitor the progressing of a cycle conveniently.
Especially in case of the touch screen type LCD monitor, user can operate and control the sterilizer conveniently by one touching
the function buttons on the screen.

The built-in panel printer prints out the cycle performance record that is able to check and analyze the results of a executed cycle.
The cycle performance record includes the serial number of sterilizer, the year/month/date of cycle start, the set parameters
(exposure temperature and time, adjusting temperature, aeration time, pressure), the execution result data of each cycle phase
(start and completion time, temperature and pressure), the maximum/minimum value of pressure and temperature during
progressing a cycle, the required time of each cycle phase, the error code occurred during progressing a cycle and other useable
informations (total required time of a executed cycle, total number of the executed cycle times and gas supply times etc.)

 Ethylene Oxide Gas Mixture

If EO +CO2 gas is injected into the sterilizing chamber directly, a trouble may occur in the piping
system due to the high pressure of the gas (about 45bar at 20℃). Decreasing pressure during delivery
to the chamber may cause an abrupt drop in temperature. Therefore when using EO + CO2 gas as a
sterilant, the exclusive heating-type EO gas pressure regulator (refer to the specification table below)
should be used to depressurize to an adequate level.

※ Caution : Manufacturer and supplier do not responsible for any problem arising from the use of a gas pressure
regulator with a different specification, e.g., for CO2 only.
※ Safety : ① Prevention of temperature increase : The temperature is controlled by the thermostat. In case of
malfunction in the thermostat, the temperature fuse is activated to cut off power.
② Prevention of pressure increase : In case of rising secondary pressure due to the leakage of gas in
the valve seat, the safety valve is activated at the pressure of 9 bar to protect the equipment.

▶ This sterilizer uses 100% ethylene oxide gas as sterilant and sterilizes the medical devices, instruments and supplies effectively by
convenient way of only inserting a small disposable gas cartridge on the holder in the chamber. Cycle progressing is fully automated
by the control system with microprocessor.
▶ The sterilization and aeration process are all completed in the chamber under negative pressure, therefore leakage of EO gas in the
working area can be fully prevented. EO gas being sucked by powerful vacuum pump is exhausted to the prepared drainage with
water safely after sterilization process.
▶ 5 kinds of typical cycle programs and the vacuum leak test cycle are installed in the sterilizer and the operator can select a proper

constantly. The gas sensor should be replaced every two years due to
its life. The zero value and span have to be calibrated after replacing a
new sensor to detect and display the gas concentration correctly.
The replacement of senor and it’ s calibration must be performed by an
authorized technician of the manufacturer.

caused by EO gas leakage.
▶ This equipment immediately sounds an audible alarm and takes the emergency measures in case of occurring EO gas leakage for

▶ Rapid and accurate response, stable operating characteristic are technical advantages of this system and it’s convenient to apply
to any special condition because user can change the set values of built-in program.
▶ In case of power failure, the built-in rechargeable battery keeps the monitoring system running continuously about for 3 hours.
Furthermore this system is also available for an efficient surveillance monitor of the other gases by connecting with all kinds of
detectors(sensors) having the output signal of 4~20mA.
▶ The built-in microprocessor for controlling the system detects the monitored data in real time and cuts off the gas supply to the
sterilizer automatically if necessary, and starts the compulsory ventilation fan automatically to eliminate the EO gas in the workplace.

Considering the health hazards caused by EO, the exposure level for operators is restricted strictly within OSHA’s Permissible Exposure
Limit(PEL) of 1 ppm measured as air in an 8 hour time-weighted average(TWA), or Short Term Exposure Limit(STEL) of 5 ppm averaged
over a sampling period of 15 minutes.

EO is flammable when its concentration in the air is over 3%, therefore keep all sources of ignition such as matches, lighted cigarettes,
sparks and static discharge away from the sterilizer. Never put electrical items containing batteries in the loads to be sterilized.

▶ If the cutting length and quantity are already set in the machine, the roll pouch is attracted to the pouch inlet automatically and the
set quantities of pouch that are sealed bottom side are produced after cutting in the set length.
▶ The pouch contained the item to be sterilized is sealed automatically if the upper side of pouch is inserted in the sealing inlet, and
sealing can be done manually by connecting the foot switch.
