FREQUENCY ADVERBS
Adverbs of frequency are those adverbs that are used to express the frequency with which an action is carried
out, that is, when we want to talk about the frequency with which we do something, or the frequency with which
something happens. One of the main problems that Spanish speakers encounter when using adverbs of
frequency in English correctly, it has to do with the position in which we must place them within a prayer.
Adverbs of Frequency in English: Rules
With adverbs of frequency in English, you have to be especially careful, since they cannot be place anywhere in
the sentence. Depending on the type of verb we will use it in a position or in another, taking into account that,
like almost everything in English, there is also some exception that you have to learn.
In the case of adverbs of frequency, the general rule is that they are placed in front of the verb:
• I always go to bed at 10pm. — Siempre me voy a dormir a las 22:00.
• She never says “good morning” when she arrives at the office. — Nunca da los buenos días al llegar a la
oficina
As you can see the basic structure of the sentence would be:
Subject + Adverb of frequency + Verb Main + Complements.
In the event that adverbs of frequency accompany the verb to be, they will be placed after:
• She is always happy. — Siempre está contenta.
• You are never on time. — Nunca llegas puntual.
In this case, the structure is different from the previous one:
Subject + Verb Be + Adverb of Frequency + Complements
You will probably wonder what happens if it is a verb that is accompanied by a Modal verb or other auxiliary? In
that case, adverbs of frequency are included in the same way, before the main verb:
• We have never seen New York. — Nunca hemos visto Nueva York.
• You can always phone me. — Siempre me puedes llamar.
Finally, and to complicate things a little more, the adverbs of frequency usually, frequently, often, sometimes
and occasionally can be placed at the beginning or at the end of the sentence.
• Usually, we see him at school. — Normalmente lo vemos en el colegio.
• I drink beer occasionally. — De vez en cuando, bebo cerveza.
Main adverbs of frequency in English
• Always. It serves to express the idea of always, forever, or very frequently. Surely do you remember the
very famous song I will always love you…
• Usually. It is used to say that something happens normally. You must be careful and not confuse it with
the expressions used to and be used to, which refer to something else: Usually, I'm late.
• Frequently. We use it to indicate that something happens frequently. We found it many times on the
web pages and in the Frequently Asked Questions sections.
• Often. We can translate it as often, that is, to talk about actions that happen in many occasions: I often
eat pizza for dinner.
• Sometimes. It is used to say that something happens sometimes or on some occasions. By example:
When she's at home, sometimes, we play basketball, but not always.
• Occasionally. We can translate it as occasionally, and we use it to say that something happens sometimes
but not frequently: Occasionally, I drink beer. By the way, be careful with spelling, occasionally, takes
double c and l but not s.
• Rarely. It is used to say that something does not happen often, something that is difficult to happen: I
rarely eat meat for dinner.
• Seldom. It is used in a very similar way to rarely. These two adverbs are often used in written rather than
spoken contexts: I rarely buy used clothes.
• Hardly ever. We can translate it as almost never to say that something happens almost exceptional: My
baby hardly ever cries. He is very quiet.
• Never. With the meaning of never, never is used to express that something has not happened in no
occasion: I've never met a woman like her
Activities.
