Research Methods and Presentation
A guide line what to include in the report: Assignment on Evaluating a Research
Paper
When evaluating a research paper or article in the field of electrical and computer engineering,
you are encouraged to read and understand research papers critically, and assess their scientific
and technical merits. You are prompted to evaluate the research methodology, experimental
procedures, data analysis, and the overall contribution of the paper to the field.
In this assignment you are expected to write a report which answers the following questions. You
are going to submit your report when you are back to school. You are free to organize your paper
as you wish but you have to address the questions listed below in your report. Note that, the report
is not like a Question –Answer mode, but writing a report using the questions as a guide or
reference for your evaluation of the article.
Main Questions to be addressed in the Report
1. Overview and Objective:
What is the research topic?
What is the main research question or objective being investigated in the paper?
What are the specific objectives or goals of the study?
2. Technical Aspects:
Are the mathematical models, equations, and simulations (if any) properly formulated
and applied?
Are the circuit designs, hardware implementations, or software algorithms described in
sufficient detail?
3. Methodology:
What research methods or experimental designs were used to address the research
question? (Summarize the methodology or experimental setup used in the study.)
Are the methods appropriate and well-described to allow for replication?
Were the data collection and analysis techniques appropriate for the study?
Evaluate the validity and reliability of the experimental methods and data analysis
techniques employed.
4. Hardware and Software Implementation:
If the research involves hardware, how are the circuit design, component selection, and
fabrication processes described?
If the research involves software, how are the algorithms, data structures, and
programming techniques explained?
Are the implementation details sufficient to allow for replication or further
development?
5. Interfacing and Integration:
If the research involves interfacing with other systems or devices, how are the
communication protocols, data exchange, and compatibility issues discussed?
1
How well does the proposed solution integrate with existing or standard systems,
platforms, or infrastructures?
6. Results (Findings) and Discussions:
Discuss the key findings or results presented in the paper.
How do the findings relate to the existing knowledge or previous research in the field?
Are the results presented clearly and supported by the data?
Identify and discuss any limitations or potential sources of error in the study.
Are the conclusions drawn by the authors justified based on the results presented?
7. Structure and Communication:
Assess the paper's readability, organization, and overall writing style.
Is the paper well-organized and easy to follow?
Is the writing clear, concise, and accessible to the intended audience?
Are the figures, tables, and other visual aids effective in supporting the key points?
8. Ethical Considerations:
Does the study address any relevant ethical issues or considerations?
Identify any ethical considerations or potential biases in the research.
9. Practical Application and Relevance:
How relevant or applicable are the findings of the study to real-world situations or
problems?
What are the practical challenges, constraints, or limitations associated with
implementing the research in real-world settings?
10. Future Work and Recommendations:
What are the potential future research directions or development plans suggested by
the authors?
Are there any specific areas or aspects that require further investigation or
improvement?
Provide your opinion on the potential impact and future directions of the research,
highlighting its strengths and weaknesses.
