Concept of stress and structural dimensioning

Shear stress
Sample problem 4:

The steel tie bar shown is to be designed to carry a tension force of magnitude 𝑃 = 120𝐾𝑁
when bolted between double brackets at 𝐴 and 𝐵. The bar will be fabricated from 20 𝑚𝑚
thick plate stock. For the grade of steel to be used, the maximum allowable stresses are σ=
175𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝜏 = 100𝑀𝑃𝑎
In order to design the tie bar:
(a) define the force 𝑃 in the system (b) determine the diameter 𝑑 of the bolt, (c) determine the
dimension ℎ of the bar.

Paie attention: each stress corresponds to a specified mode of loading!

Solution:
1
a) Diameter of the Bolt. Since the bolt is in double shear,𝐹1 = 2 𝑃 = 60𝑘𝑁
𝐹1 60𝑘𝑁
𝜏= = 1
𝐴 𝜋𝑑2
4
60𝑘𝑁
100𝑀𝑃𝑎 =
1 2
4 𝜋𝑑
𝑑 = 27.6𝑚𝑚

b) Dimension h of the bar:

The thickness of the steel plate is t =20 mm, we have then:

𝑃
𝜎 = 𝑡ℎ
120𝑘𝑁
175𝑀𝑃𝑎 =
0,020. ℎ
ℎ = 34.3𝑚𝑚
