We look ahead at some of the
THE biggest trading card game news of

C RDS the month and discover what’s on

the cards… Words by Ross ‘The Wossy’ Gilbert

THE BEST SET YET

Exciting news in the One Piece TCG this month as PRB-01 (One Piece Card The Best) released in Japan. A
brand-new type of set it features only one “new” card (a Sanji leader) but reprints a whole bunch of playable
cards and introduces a LOT of alternate-art versions of said cards.
Most excitingly of all are 30 new DON!! cards, each themed after one of the leader cards in the game.
All 30 of these are available as regular versions (one per pack), foil, textured, parallel versions (one per box)
and fantastic gold Super Parallel versions where they are limited to one per case of 10 boxes! Good luck to
anyone aiming to get a full set of 10 of their preferred Super Parallel DON!!.
The good news for Western One Piece TCG fans is that our sets are nearly-identical to Japanese sets
so we can have all this goodness when the set releases in November. One surprise in the set was the
existence of a Manga Rare “god pack” featuring reprints of all the Manga Rare’s from the first seven
expansions. Whether we will get this in the West however remains to be seen.

THE SMALLEST PACKS YET

The latest Magic: the Gathering expansion Bloomburrow launched with a fantastic woodland
theme and the usual assortment of products such as Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, a Starter
Kit, Bundles and Commander decks. However, it also offered a new type of product, the Value Booster.
Designed as a budget-friendly way to enjoy Magic: the Gathering, each booster contains three commons,
two uncommons, a wildcard of any rarity and a final card that could
be a land, traditional foil or Special Guests card. It will be interesting
to see if any TCGs decide to follow with their own version.

THE HARDEST CARDS TO FIND YET

Trading card games have a long history of releasing exclusive cards at conventions and Star Wars: Unlimited
has thrown its hat into this proverbial ring with the release of the 2024 Convention Exclusive product. Like
all the best convention-exclusives there are no mechanically unique cards, so not picking this set up will not
disadvantage players, but the six alternate art cards are causing quite a stir among fans of the game.
Excitingly, this set includes cards of Asajj Ventress and Darth Maul from Twilight of the Republic, the
third and as-of-yet unreleased expansion of Star Wars: Unlimited. The set is releasing at Gen Con, Spiel,
PAX West and PAX Unplugged but the initial release at San Diego Comic Con has led to stories of the set
selling out so fast that many fans have been left disappointed.

THE BIGGEST BONANZA YET

The Rarity Collection set for Yu-Gi-Oh may have been a great set to celebrate the 25th anniversary but with the
Quarter Century Bonanza expansion, Konami are carrying on with a bunch of new twists thrown in.
Like the Rarity Collection, there are five cards per pack but this time a Super Rare has been replaced with
a guaranteed Platinum or Quarter Century Secret Rare in every pack. This slot actually sees Quarter Century
Bonanza transform into two sets in one as this slot contains 1 of 200 cards from a nostalgia pool of cards only
available in this slot, separate from the regular 78-card set. This means a lot more cards will be available as
Quarter Century Secret Rare’s before the celebrations have to stop. The Quarter Century Bonanza is due for
release on November 8th.

With that in mind, in order to play a game, you

can either purchase physical decks or digital.
If you prefer physical decks, as many of us will,
these can then be scanned into your digital
account to then be able to play that way too.
The demo deck is free digitally, letting you
then play online competitively or as part of a
campaign. As for how to play?
“Each turn you draw a hand of five cards.
You alternate with your opponent playing
one card each into lanes. The creatures then
will attack whatever’s across from them. If
there’s nothing across from them, they hit

cool thing about it is we don’t have any kind
of mana like Magic: the Gathering or anything
like that. Every card you play, when you play
it, it levels up and the higher level version
goes into your discard pile. And then every
three turns, you shuffle your deck. So as
you’re playing cards, you’re not just playing

the first cheeky games of Pontoon at school for buttons or lunch money. Yet
sometimes we get waylaid as grown-ups and think we need to play “proper”
games, with boards and pieces and multiple-hour play-times. Here are a few great
entries from the world of great card games. Words by Chris Lowry

3 LORD OF THE RINGS LCG

Lots of people have the impression that collectable card games involve buying thousands
of packs, hunting desperately for an elusive highly powered one. The Lord of the Rings
Living Card Game approach is much better, as the packs are simply sold in sets,
containing everything you need for each scenario. This is also a game that nails theme
better than almost any other I’ve played. You feel like you are literally in a band of adventurers, racing
down the Anduin as goblins fire barbed arrows in your direction.

4 STAR REALMS
“Deck-building for beginners” is how I’d describe Star Realms; you begin with a tiny squadron
of pitiful ships and end as the Grand Admiral of a terrible armada. The artwork is punchy and
inviting, the rules quick and straightforward, and the variability is enough to make every game
completely different. For more on this title, check out page 39 for our deeper dive into the joy
hidden in this tiny box.
