System Description

The EDW consists of two layers of thin glass with an electrochromic polymer
gel material in between. The window glass layers have a conductive coating
on the inside and are bonded together with an epoxy that acts as a seal for the
polymer material. There are two leads on opposite sides of the window that
provide power to the electrochromic gel to dim the window. When a voltage is
applied to the gel, the gel is chemically reduced on the cathode and oxidized
on the anode. The oxidization of the gel causes the windows to darken.

For Training Purposes Onl Passenger Compartment Windows - Functional Description

Teaching Points
1. The cabin attendant panel (CAP) and switch/controller both give an input to
the cabin service system controller (CSSC).

Student Notes
Functional Description

In the transparent state, the visible light transmittance (VLT) is 45%. It reduces
to 0.01% VLT in the fully darkened state. Even in the fully darkened state, an
external fire can be easily recognized. If there is a power failure, the windows
will be transparent. If the EDW fails in flight, the flight attendant can paste a
tinted film over the plastic inner pane.

When a cabin attendant panel (CAP) selection is made, a signal is sent to the
cabin zone unit (CZU) and then to the cabin service system controller (CSSC).
CSSC provides a control command to the remote power distribution unit
(RPDU) to supply 28V DC power to the electronically dimmable window
(EDW) switch/controller. The switch/controller supplies a voltage to the EDW
to dim the window. There is a customer option to automatically make the

787
windows transparent at an airline-specified altitude during descent.

When the switch/controller switch is pushed, a signal is sent to the CZU and
then to the CSSC. CSSC provides a control command to the RPDU to supply
28V DC power to the EDW switch/controller. The switch/controller supplies a
voltage to the EDW to dim the window.

nut plates attached at the window frame. The attachment also holds 10
window clips. The 10 window clips fit into the foam mount assembly on the
EDW middle pane.

The plastic inner pane is part of the window reveal-main handle panel
assembly, which is attached to the passenger entry door with six latches. The

For Training Purposes Onl Passenger Entry Door Windows - Electronically Dimmable The EDWs have an interface with the remote power distribution unit (RPDU).
Each door EDW is physically independent from the other door EDWs and is a
Window functionally independent system that is not connected to the cabin services
system.
Teaching Points
1. Electronically dimmable windows (EDW) consist of two layers of thin glass
with an electrochromic polymer gel material in between. The oxidization of the
gel causes the windows to darken.

2. The EDW can be set only to clear or dark.

3. The only way to control the EDW light levels is by a switch/controller in the
liner above the window.

Student Notes
General

The electronically dimmable windows (EDW) change the windows settings to

transparent or opaque (dark) to decrease the light in the cabin.

System Description

787
The EDW consist of two layers of thin glass with an electrochromic polymer
gel material in between.
Maximum voltage to EDW is 1.2 V.

For Training Purposes Only

The EDW is held in position with a foam mount assembly to protect the glass
on the EDW. The only way to control the EDW setting is by a switch/controller
in the liner above the window. Before removing the window, disarm the door
and set the emergency power assist system (EPAS) safety switch to the safe
position.

For Training Purposes Onl Passenger Entry Door Windows - EDW Switch

Teaching Points
1. An electronically dimmable window (EDW) switch/controller in the liner
above the window allows flight attendants to control lighting levels for the EDW.

2. The EDW switch/controller has two switches to control the light level.

Student Notes
General

An electronically dimmable window (EDW) switch/controller in the liner above

the window lets the flight attendants control the quantity of light that comes
through the window.

System Description

The passenger entry door EDW switch/controller has two switch buttons to
control two levels of light settings, clear or dark. The switch/controller includes
five blue indicator light emitting diodes (LED), but only the lowest LED light will

787
remain illuminated when the window is in the darkened state. During transition,
the blue LED will pulse. When the window is in the clear state, the LEDs will
not be illuminated. The upper part of the switch lightens the EDW and the
bottom part of the switch darkens the EDW.

If one side of the control switch fails, override the switch by pushing on the
functioning side for 10 seconds. For example, if the window is fully dimmed
and the clear window function fails, hold down the window dimming side of the
switch for 10 seconds. This has the same effect as pushing the window

For Training Purposes Onl Passenger Entry Door Windows - Functional Description

Teaching Points
1. The electronically dimmable window (EDW) switch/controller gives an input
directly to the EDW.

Student Notes
Functional Description

In the transparent state, the visible light transmittance (VLT) is 45%. It reduces
to 0.01% VLT in the fully darkened state. Even in the fully darkened state, an
external fire can be easily recognized. If there is a power failure, the windows
will be transparent.

When the switch/controller switch is pushed, the remote power distribution unit
(RPDU) supplies 28V DC power to the EDW switch/controller. The switch/
controller supplies a voltage to the EDW to dim the window.
