Characteristics of a Learning Environment
Characteristics of a Learning Environment
The school
FS 1 1 environment
This Episode 1 provides an opportunity for students to examine and reflect on a school
environment
that promotes learning and development
> At the end of this episode, I must be able to determine the characteristics of a safe, secure
school environment that supports learning (PPST 2.1.1).
3. As a basic part of the school’s visual environment, display boards have four
general purposes:
Decorative - They offer visual stimulation and appeal to aesthetics. They set the
social and Psychological atmosphere of the school.
Motivational - They encourage students to perform better and have greater
confidence. An example would be the display of students’ outputs that show
that each output is recognized and valued. The bulletin boards help celebrate the
learners’ growth and progress.
Informational - They are used as a strategy to disseminate information readily.
Instructional - They move students to respond and participate through
interactive displays. They get students to think about and communicate their
learning.
4 . The set of criteria for evaluating bulletin board displays includes effective
communication, attractiveness, Balance, unity, interactivity, legibility, correctness, and
durability.
OBSERVE, ANALYZE, REFLECT
To realize the Intended Learning Outcome, work my way through these steps:
1. Visit a school. Look into facilities and support learning areas on the campus, then in the Classroom.
2. Observe and use the checklist as you move around the school premises.
3. Analyze your gathered data about the school environment.
4. Reflect on the characteristics of a school environment that promotes learning.
5. Present your idea of a good school environment through any of these:
As you move around the campus, observation forms are provided for you to document your

Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the space Provided.
Guide Question Classroom Observation Report
1. Describe the community or neighborhood
where the school is found.
2. Describe the school campus. What colors The campus has the same color buildings. The
do you see? What is the condition of the color of their buildings are beige and green. The
buildings? condition of the buildings there are some with
average condition and some are in good condition.
There were new buildings and old buildings
wherein some floors are broken as well as the
windows and blackboards.
1. Look at the walls of the classroom. What is posted on the walls? What heroes, religious
figures, lessons, visual aids, and announcements, do you see posted?
2. Examine how the pieces of furniture are arranged. Where is the teacher’s
table located? How are the tables and chairs/desks arranged?
Be guided by these tasks as you do your observation. Then accomplish the matrix to record your
data.
1. Wall Displays The displays are properly arranged and there were
paintings in front. It was in good condition that makes
the classroom more interesting and creative.
2. Teacher’s Table
It was placed in front of the center portion and it was in
good condition with minimal dents.
3. Learner’s Desks
The learner’s desks were divided into two rows. The
desks are close to one another that makes them crowded.
Some are in good condition and some are damaged or
not in good condition.
4. Blackboard
It was placed in front and it was not in good condition
because it has dents and damages.
When I first visited the classroom, they were not in their proper sits. Some were walking
and standing around as the teacher was giving instructions regarding their activity for that day.
When I enter the classroom, I noticed that the classroom is not that neat or clean and the
chairs were not properly arranged. The teachers table is placed/ located in front near the
blackboard. I also noticed that the classroom on the 3rd floor is not that safe since there are no
grills the glass in the windows was not complete and there many glass missing.
How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact the learning of students going to
school?
What are your Conclusions?
In conclusion, I can say that the school campus and classroom environment have a
big part/impact on the learning of the students because it can cause distraction to students if
the classroom is not arranged properly.
How does this relate to your knowledge of child and Adolescent development /how does
this relate to your Knowledge of facilitating learning?
It can relate to my knowledge of child and adolescent development and can also
relate to my knowledge of facilitating learning because I can use it to equip that knowledge in
understanding the students what they are been going through.
REFLECT
1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why? Why not?
As of the moment, I don’t know because as I have observed, some sections/students don’t want to listen
to their teachers and have their world. But if I were given a chance I would take it as a challenge to
nurture/educate them.
A school campus that is conducive to learning should have a clean and green environment.
It should have complete facilities to meet the student needs in learning and the building
should built properly for more comfortable learning/sharing session with knowledge between
teacher and students.
A classroom that is conducive should be well-ventilated so that the focus on the discussion.
Materials and desks should be properly arranged and utilized. And importantly a clean
classroom environment.
In the future, if I encounter a room with no ventilation and lights I will ask help for the parents of
my students to contribute to the ventilation and lights of the classroom or I will request the principal of the school
to provide an electric fan and light bulbs for the classroom. I and my students will collaborate to decorate the
bulletin boards and post informational and instructional posters to them. As a teacher, I will not make my students
feel that they were not good enough because I know that every student has their strengths and weaknesses, if most
of my students are not catching up on my lessons I will repeat the lesson with a new teaching strategy.
During my observation, I realized that the learning environment is very important to the students.
Maintaining cleanliness, posting display boards and making an environment friendly for students could help them
feel comfortable when studying. As a future teacher, we need to provide a better environment for students and
give them their learning process.

As you look around and examine board displays, use the observation guide and
forms provided for you to document your observations.
1. Go around the school and examine the board displays. How many board
display do you see?
2. Where are the display boards found? Are they in places where target
viewers can see them?
3. What are the displays about? What key messages do they convey? What
images and colors do you see?
How are the pieces of information and images arranged?
4. What materials were used in making the displays? Are borders used?
7. Think about what got your attention. Why did it get your attention?

To improve this board display, I’m suggesting to pay attention to the design and layout of the materials
because this aspect is the key the effectiveness of the board display and to achieve its purposes which
are to inform and motivate the students. Make it more eye-catching and colorful.
The purpose of the board display is to inform the students about the latest updates or
memorandum, motivate them to be achievers and engage them through participating on school
activities or upcoming projects.
Did the board display design reflect the likes/interests of its target audience? Why? Why
not?
With the board’s overall theme, I think it reflects the interest of its target audience
who are the students. But the board display is lacking in creative aspect although the labels used
are cut-outs letters
glued in construction paper. Board displays should be eye-catcher, and this is what this board
displays
need to have, although it targets the audience interest, it is still not as effective as it should be.
Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to understand?
Why? Why
not?
The language use is English and it uses simple words as the labels of the
information or materials posted. The font sizes are also legible from a distance.

1. Name at least five skills that a teacher should have to be able to come up with
effective board displays. Elaborate on why each skill is needed.
To create effective board displays, a teacher should possess a combination of skills that cater to both
visual and instructional aspects. These skills include creativity to think outside the box and incorporate different
media, resourcefulness to find and utilize available resources, originality to create a unique and engaging display,
good communication skills to articulate complex ideas clearly, and artistic skills to create a visually appealing
display. By possessing these skills, a teacher can create a board display that is engaging, easy to understand, and
effective in promoting student learning.
2. Which of the skills you named in # 1 do you already have? Recall your past
experiences in making board displays. How do you practice these skills?
As I consider the 5 skills I mentioned in number 1, I believe creativity is a dominant skill I have
that can greatly impact the effectiveness of a board display. To practice creativity, I would set aside time to
brainstorm ideas, experiment with different materials and designs, look for inspiration from various sources,
collaborate with colleagues or students, and reflect on past experiences to inform future creative endeavors. By
developing my creativity skills, I can think outside the box, come up with innovative ideas, and incorporate
different media to make the display more engaging and memorable, ultimately creating a board display that is
both visually appealing and effective.
3. Which skills do you still need to develop? What concrete steps will you take on how you
can improve on or acquire these skills?
As a teacher, I may still need to develop my good communication skills, as I may not have a strong
background in articulating complex ideas in a clear and concise manner. To improve my good communication
skills, I would take concrete steps such as taking courses or workshops on effective communication, practicing
active listening, and seeking feedback from colleagues, students, or mentors on my communication style. I would
also observe and learn from other teachers who are skilled in communicating complex ideas in a clear and
engaging way, and join a community of practice or a professional learning community focused on effective
communication, where I could learn from others, share my own experiences, and get support and feedback. By
taking these steps, I can improve my good communication skills and create more effective and engaging board
displays that support student learning.
