HW: DC Machines

Q1. A seperately excited DC motor is rotating at 1045 rpm, with constant field current,
consume an armature current of 50 A at 120 V. Armature resistance is 0.1 . If the motor load
changes so that the motor now consumes 95 A at 120 V, find the motor speed.
Answer: 1004 rpm
Q2. A seperately excited DC generator has the following data: armature resistance 0.04 ; field
resistance 110 ; rotational and core losses 960 W; field voltage 230 V. The generator supplies
at a terminal voltage of 230 V. Calculate (a) armature current at which the efficiency is
maximized, and (b) that maximum efficiency.
Answer: (a) 189.8 A; (b) 93.8%
Q3. A shunt DC motor rated at 230 V, with armature resistance of 0.05  and field resistance
of 75 , consumes 7 A when no-load at 1120 rpm. The current consumed by the motor at
another given load is 46 A. Find (a) motor speed a the given load, (b) rotational and core losses,
and (c) efficiency.
Answer: (a) 1110.5 rpm; (c) 903.9 W; (c) 83.9%;
Q4. If the field resistance of the motor in Q3 is increased to 100  at the given load, other
conditions are unchanged, what is the new speed of the motor?
Answer: 1480 rpm
Q5. A series DC motor has an armature resistance of 0.1  and field resistance of 0.15 , and
consumes 48 A at 230 V, with a speed of 720 rpm. Rotational and core losses are 650 W.
Ignoring stray losses, calculate (a) electromagnetic torque, (b) shaft power, and (c) efficiency.
Answer: (a) 138.8 N; (b) 13.16 HP; (c) 88.9%
Q6. Now adjust load so that the motor in Q5 consumes 32 A. Find (a) motor speed, (b) Torque
change in percentage.
Answer: (a) 1100 rpm; (b) 55.6%
Q7. A shunt DC motor rated at 220 V has an armature resistance of 0.2  and field resistance
of 110 . Under no-load condition, the speed is 1000 rpm and consumed current is 7 A. When
full-load, the input power is 11 kW. (a) Calculate full-load speed (b) Also, calculated the full-
load electromagnetic torque.
Answer: (a) 960.7 rpm; (b) 100.38 N.m
Q8. (Text problem 8.2)
A separately excited motor runs at 1045 rpm with a constant field current while the armature
current is 50 A. The voltage at the terminals of armature is 120 V. Ra =0.1 . If the load on
the motor changes such that it now takes 95 A at 120 V, determine the speed at this load.
Answer: 1004 rpm
Q9. (Text problem 8.6)
A DC machine has Rf = 10  and Ra = 2 . When run as a seperately excited generator with
If= 3 A and n = 1000 rpm, the open-circuit voltage is 250 V.
(a) If the machine is connected as a series motor and applied voltage is 350 V DC, find the
steady-state torque at a speed of 2000 rpm. (Answer: Te = 3.054 N.m)
(b) If the load torque is 10 N.m, what is the value of the applied voltage necessary to produce
a speed of 800 rpm? (Answer: 278.8 V)
