The fight for the Balkan States
In 1878 the Russian empire and the Ottoman empire had a war in where
the Russian empire wanted to separate the Balkan states(Serbia , Bosnia ,
Bulgaria and Romania) from the Ottoman empire.
The Treaty of Berlin (1878)
In conclusion of the war in 1878 the treaty of Berlin was signed . It stated
that the Austro-Hungarian empire would be temporarily given the right
to administer the region , but the Balkan states would still be officially
considered as a part of the Ottoman empire

 The secret agreement between
Austro-Hungarian empire and Russia
Before annexing Bosnia and Herzegovina the Austro Hungarian foreign minister , Aehrenthal
made a secret deal with the foreign minister of Russia , Izvolsky that if the Austro Hungarian
empire were to annex Bosnia and Herzegovina then Russia would not interfere in it . Russia's
foreign minister agreed to this because they wanted the strait of Bosphorous . So they made a
deal that Russia would not interfere in the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina , and that
Austro Hungarian empire would not interfere with the annexation of Istanbul.

Going against the secret agreement

Despite having a secret agreement there were still Slavic people living in Russia and when they
heard the news they were completely against it and alot of protests started happening . Russia
was weak at that time and had to listen to it's civilians so it started supporting Serbia instead.
The annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
In October in 1908 the Austro-Hungarian empire annexed
Bosina and Herzegovina under the command of emperor
Franz Josef . When this happened the Bosnians didn't
accept it and the Serbians were also upset with this.

The Ottoman empires internal problems

At the time the Ottoman empire had internal revolutions
which allowed Bulgaria to successfully separate itself from
the Ottoman empire

The assaination of Franz Ferdinand
On 28 June 1914 the Arch duke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austria-Hungarian empire. He and his
wife were visiting the city of Sarajevo . As they travelling through the city a revolutionary named
Cabrinovic threw a bomb at their car with bumped and slipped and hit the soldiers on the street . They
got injured and the Arch duke and his wife escaped but they went to visit the injured people in the
hospital but as they were going they took a wrong turn. As their car was reversing a 19 year old school
student, Gavrilo Princip shot them both dead . He was given a 20 year prison sentence.

A spark has been ignited

The assination made the Austro-Hungarian empire very angry and they thought the Serbian
government was behind the assination and they sent a list of demands to Serbia . When Serbia declined
, the Austro-Hungarian empire declared war on them .
