C. Engine-Driven Pump 1030GK

R (Ref. Fig. 016, 017)

The engine-driven pump (EDP) is attached to the accessory gearbox on the
bottom of the engine. A splined quill drive connects the gearbox to the
input shaft of the pump. The quill drive is made to shear if the pump can
not turn. The attachment flange of the pump has keyhole slots where the
installation bolts are. The suction line connection has a quick-release
self-sealing coupling. Together, they make it possible to replace the
pump quickly.

The pump is of the variable-displacement type. The rotating assembly

turns all of the time that the engine operates. The pump has nine pistons
which are connected to a moveable yoke plate. When the angle of the yoke
plate changes, the stroke of the pistons changes and the output of the
pump is increased or decreased. The compensator valve supplies servo
pressure to the actuator piston, which controls the angle of the yoke.
A solenoid valve (controlled from the flight compartment) makes it
possible to change the operation of the pump so that it does not supply
pressure to the system (depressurized mode). The EDP includes a blocking
valve which isolates the pump from the hydraulic system when the pump
operates in the depressurized mode.

In the depressurized mode the outlet of the pump is connected internally

directly to the inlet of the pump. The pump then operates with an
internal pressure of approximately 1000 psi (70 bar), with zero flow.
This is the pressure necessary on the actuator piston to reduce the angle
of the yoke to near zero when the outlet and control pressures are
balanced.
A case pressure relief valve connects the fluid in the EDP case to the
inlet of the pump if the pressure of the fluid in the case is too high
(for example if the case drain pipe is blocked). A pump inlet boost
impeller is included in the EDP which increases the pressure of the fluid
at the inlet of the pump. This makes certain that the chambers of the
pump get a sufficient supply of fluid at all conditions of operation.
Seal drain fluid goes through a pipe into the engine drains mast (Ref.
71-70-00). From there it goes overboard. This prevents the collection of
fluid in the nacelle. The EDP seal drain pipe is kept apart from other
pipes in the drains mast. Thus you can see where any leakage comes from
and measure the amount of leakage from the EDP.
The EDP supplies fluid at 206 + 3 -0 bar (3000 +43 -0 psi) at zero flow
and 196 bar (2854 psi) with a flow of 140 l/min (37 USgal/min). The EDP
gives this flow at its rated delivery speed of 3702 rpm (equivalent to
93.5% engine N2 speed).
If the supply of fluid to the EDP stops (the fire valve is closed) the
EDP can operate for a maximum of 15 mins. before it is damaged.
D. Manifolds

There are three manifolds in the system, they are:

- the HP manifold,
- the PTU manifold,
- the LP manifold.

Description
The primary components in the power transfer system are:
- the Power Transfer Unit (PTU)
- the Green-System solenoid valve (1012GL)
- the Yellow-System solenoid valve (3012GL)
- the isolation coupling
- the PTU switch.
Power is automatically sensed and transferred through the PTU. A piston in
the PTUs control valve is exposed to the Green and Yellow system
pressure. When the pressure difference between the Green and Yellow
systems is more than 500 psi (34.5 bar), the PTU starts to operate. The
PTU transfers power from the system with the larger pressure to the other
system. The PTU of the Green and Yellow systems is connected to the Green
and Yellow-system solenoid valves.
When the Yellow electric pump starts because of operation of the cargo
doors, movement of the flight controls is prevented. Electrical power is
supplied to the two solenoid valves of the Green and Yellow systems
(1012GL and 3012GL) and the solenoid valve of the Yellow-leakage
measurement system (3150GP). Thus no hydraulic power is supplied to the
Green or Yellow system.
The two solenoid valves keep the PTU either armed or off. The solenoid
valve of the Green system (1012GL) is connected to the Green PTU manifold.
The solenoid valve of the Yellow system (3012GL) is connected to the
Yellow PTU manifold. The two solenoid valves operate at the same time. The
PTU switch on the overhead panel 40VU controls the solenoid valves.
There is no transfer of power when the isolation coupling is disconnected.
The PTU switch is installed in the overhead panel 40VU. All other
components are installed in the main landing-gear compartment.
The power transfer system gets electrical power from the DC System of the
aircraft. The service bus 602PP supplies 28 V DC to the solenoid valves
through the PTU switch.
The PTU is made up of a variable displacement unit coupled to a fixed
displacement unit. The variable displacement unit is connected to the
yellow hydraulic system. The fixed displacement unit is connected to the
green hydraulic system. Displacement of the variable displacement unit is
varied to maintain the required running and breakdown pressure
differentials between systems. Displacement of the variable unit is
controlled by means of a control which senses the system delta pressure.
The variable displacement unit is at maximum displacement during the
power transfer from the Yellow to the Green system. Then it is at minimum
displacement during the power transfer from the Green to the Yellow
system.
The variable displacement unit includes a hydraulic servo valve and a
variable cam. The servo valve gets input from the pressure differential,
which starts the PTU. It controls the displacement of the variable cam
which in turn gives the quantity of stroke. During PTU operation, the
servovalve controls the pressure differential.
There are three hydraulic connections on the fixed displacement unit and
three on the variable displacement unit. The connections are:
- high pressure,
- low pressure,
- case drain.

the pressure is less than 22 psi (1.52 bar).

PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE

A pressure relief valve, installed on each reservoir,

relieves pressure to the atmosphere in the event of a
system overpressure.
The threshold of the pressure relief valve is 77 psi
(5.3 bar).
