Chemical Effect of Electric Current
Conductor: - The Materials, which allow electric current to
pass through. (For Ex:- Iron, Copper, Aluminium, etc.)
Good Conductor of Electricity: - The material which allow
electric current to pass through them, are good conductor of
electricity.
Bad Conductor of Electricity: - The material which do not
allow electric current to pass through them, are Bad
conductor of electricity.
Q-1). What are Conductor? (Good Conductor)
Materials which allow electric current to flow through them are
called conductors.
Q-2). What are Insulators? (Bad Conductor)
Materials which do not allow electric current to flow through them
are called insulators.
Q-3). Classify the following liquids into conductors and insulators :
lemon juice, distilled water, tap water, milk.
Conductors : lemon juice, tap water.
Insulators : distilled water, milk.
Do Liquids Conduct Electricity: -
Bulb
Bulb Battery
Battery
Lemon
Normal Juice
Water
Lemon Juice is a good Conductor of
Normal tap water is a good Conductor
Electricity
of Electricity
Do Liquids Conduct Electricity: -
When the Liquid between the two
The circuit of the tester
ends of the tester
become complete
(Circuit) allows the electric current to
pass.
The Current flows in the
circuit and the Bulb glows.
The Filament of the bulb gets Bulb Start
Current Flow
heated to a high Temperature Glowing
If The Current Flow The Filament does
Bulb does
Through a Circuit is not get heated
too weak sufficiently not Glow.
Tap Water Good Conductor of electricity
Distilled Water Bad Conductor of electricity
Salt Dissolved in
Salt Solution Good Conductor of electricity
Distilled Water

on what solution and
electrodes are used. Changes of solution may
occur
These are some of the chemical effects of the electric current.
Electroplating: -
Electric Current is passed through the
copper sulphate solution.
Battery
Copper sulphate
Copper Plate dissociates into copper
and sulphate
Copper Sulphate
Solution • Copper gets drawn to the
electrode connected to the
Cu + So4 CuSo4 negative terminal of the battery
and gets deposited on it
Other Electrodes
Copper Plate, an equal amount of copper gets dissolved in the solution.
• This means that copper gets transferred from one electrode to the
other.
• The process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another
material by means of electricity is called electroplating.
• Electroplating is widely used in industry for coating metal objects.
• Ex:- Chromium plating is done on many objects such as bath taps,
car parts, kitchen gas burner, wheel rims etc.
• Jewellery makers electroplate silver and gold on less expensive
metals.
• Iron objects get corrode and rust easily. So, a coating of zinc is despite
on iron to protect it from corrosion and formation of rust
