• The Arab attacks in 1947 to the violence that erupted in
December Palestine following the United Nations'
proposed partition plan for Palestine in November 1947.
Arab attaks The plan called for the establishment of separate Jewish
and Arab states, which was accepted by the Jewish
1947 community but rejected by the Arab side. This rejection
led to escalating tensions and violence.
Attack on Deir Yassin 9
April 1948
• The Deir Yassin massacre occurred on April
9, 1948, when Zionist forces attacked the
Arab village of Deir Yassin near Jerusalem.
This violent incident resulted in the deaths of
over 100 Palestinian villagers, including
women and children, and it contributed
significantly to the tensions and violence
surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
during this period. The massacre is often
cited as a pivotal event that fueled further
violence in the region.

6 Arab states invade
Israel 15 May 1948
• On May 15, 1948, following Israel's declaration of
statehood, several Arab states—Egypt, Jordan, Syria,
Lebanon, Iraq, and to a lesser extent, Saudi Arabia—
invaded Israel, initiating the Arab-Israeli War. This
military action was a response to the UN Partition Plan
to divide British Mandate Palestine into separate
Jewish and Arab states. The conflict lasted until 1949,
causing significant territorial shifts and the
displacement of many Palestinians.
Isreal tensions with
Lebanon 1949
• In 1949, Israel and Lebanon signed an
armistice agreement on March 23, effectively
ending hostilities following the 1948 Arab-
Israeli War. Lebanon was the first Arab
League nation to seek an armistice with
Israel, although it did not participate in the
subsequent Six-Day War. The 1949 armistice
led to a relatively stable but tense border
situation that fluctuated over the years.
Armistice between isreal
and Egypt 14 February
1949
• On 6 January 1949, Dr. Bunche said that Egypt consented to
start talks with Israel on an armistice.
• They had the talks on the island Rhodes on 12 January
• after a short period of the discussions, Israel agreed to the
release of a Egyptian brigade in Faluja.
• israel demanded that Egypt withdraw all its forces from the area
of Palestine,
• One reason for the deadlock was the mounting tension in Egypt,
which culminated on 12 February 1949 in the murder of Hassan
el-Banah.
• In February, Israel threatened to abandon the talks, the United
States interviened and said to the parties to bring them to a
successful conclusion, and on 24 February the Israel-Egypt
armistice agreement was signed in Rhodes.
Effects on palistine
• The effects of the civil war on Palestine, particularly after the 2007 conflict
between Fatah and Hamas, are significant and multisided
• Political Fragmentation: The division between Fatah in the West Bank and
Hamas in Gaza has weakened Palestinian unity and complicates negotiations
with Israel.
• Humanitarian Crisis: The blockade of Gaza has resulted in severe shortages of
food, water, and healthcare, contributing to dire living conditions and widespread
displacement.
• Economic Strain: Political instability and violence have devastated the economy,
leading to high unemployment and increased poverty, especially in Gaza.
• Psychological Impact: Continuous conflict has caused widespread trauma, with
many experiencing anxiety and PTSD.
• International Relations: The political split complicates diplomatic efforts, as
different factions receive varying international support.
• Ongoing Conflict: The legacy of civil war continues to fuel violence and tensions
between Palestinian factions and with Israeli forces.
Effects on Israel
The effects on Israel following the Civil and
Independence War included the establishment
of a Jewish state, as Israel declared
independence on May 14, 1948. The conflict
led to significant territorial gains for Israel
beyond the borders proposed by the United
Nations, as they successfully defended
against attacks from Palestinian Arabs and
neighboring Arab states.
