Communication
The English word ‘communication’ is derived from the Latin communist,
which means common sense. The word communication means sharing the
same ideas. In other words, the transmission and interaction of facts, ideas,
opinions, feelings or attitudes. Communication is the essence of
management. The basic function of management (planning, planning,
staffing, supervision and management) cannot be done effectively without
effective communication. Communication is a two-way process which involves
transferring of information or messages from one person or group to another.
This process goes on and includes a minimum of one sender and receiver to
pass on the messages. These messages can either be any ideas, imagination,
emotions, or thoughts. Communication is a Latin word which means “to
share”. There are different modes of communication available today. These
include emails, chats, WhatsApp, skype (conference calls), etc. Effective
communication makes people’s work easier and smooth.
Methods of communication
There are various different Methods if communication. This
includes Verbal communication, Non verbal communication,
Listening , writing communication and visual
communication. Research has shown that non-verbal cues
and body langu, facial expressions and tone of voice amount
for almost 55% of all communication.
Verbal communication
Verbal communication is a type of communication where we
use spoken and written words to get our message and
information across to the other person.
In other words, whenever we use our words to express
ourselves, our feelings, and our thoughts, we are verbally
communicating. Yes, even when we are writing to someone, it is
considered verbal communication.
Nonverbal communication
Nonverbal communication, also called manual language, is the process
of sending and receiving messages without using words, either spoken
or written. Common examples of manual language include facial
expressions, gestures, body posture, and eye contact. Similar to the way
that italicizing emphasizes written language, nonverbal behavior may
The term nonverbal communication was introduced in 1956 by
psychiatrist Jürgen Ruesch and author Weldon Kees in the
book Nonverbal Communication: Notes on the Visual Perception of
Human Relations.
Nonverbal messages have been essential to human relations for
centuries and continue to be a critical aspect of communication. For
instance, in The Advancement of Learning (1605), Francis
Bacon observed that "the lineaments of the body...disclose the
disposition and inclination of the mind...further disclose the present
humor and state of the mind and will.
Visual communication
Visual communication is the use of graphics to
represent information for the purpose of
communication. Visual communication is mainly used
to add more meaning to the information
communicated. Individuals use visual communications
to help them depict emotions in the audience, thus
making the communication more relatable. Also, visual
communication makes the audience understand the
idea presented and can be used on a wide range of
people.
Communication cycle
The communication cycle is
the process of relaying
information between sender
and receiver. This process
begins with the sender, who
decides what the message is,
how they will relay it, and
which medium is the best way
to share the message. From
there, the receiver must
interpret the message and
then give their feedback on it.
Communication barriers
which information is exchanged between individuals through a system of signs,
symbols. The concept of communication involves a sender, a message and a
recipient.
The sender sends the message and the recipient is the receiver of the
message. The process of communication is never smooth as it is affected by
the barriers of communication.
Barriers to effective communication can result in confusion which can lead to
incorrect information being conveyed or miscommunication which can lead to
loss of business. Following are some of the barriers to effective communication:
1. Semantic barriers
2. Psychological barriers
3. Organisational barriers
4. Cultural barriers
5. Physical barriers
6. Physiological barriers
Barries related to the formation of
messages
The language used therein, the wordings, the preciseness
and the timing count a lot for the success of
communication. For instance, if the message contains
many jargons and slangs when communicating with
someone who has never heard such expression, it will not
be understood by the recipient.
Internal barriers
Examples of internal barriers are fatigue, poor
listening skills, attitude toward the sender or the
information, lack of interest in the message, fear,
mistrust, past experiences, negative attitude,
problems at home, lack of common experiences,
and emotions.
External barriers
The external barriers are the outside, physical ones
such as the noise, the climate, and the environment.
The external barriers can be easily overcome. For
instance, while making a phone call in an airport if the
din of a flight taking off obstructs clarity in listening,
you can always pause, or make another call.
Effective communication
Effective communication is the process of sharing
information, building relationships, and collaborating
with others in a way that is clear and meaningful. It
involves more than just speaking or writing, but rather
choosing the right language and channels to convey a
message that is understood. Effective communication
can be important in personal relationships, professional
settings, and social contexts.
