Identity and the ways we define it are constantly shaped by history. Socio-cultural
exchanges in the region have helped establish a sense of a Southeast Asian identity.
In shaping ASEAN Identity, arts and culture have a significant role to play.
Artistic and cultural exchanges between Southeast Asian nations expose people to
different worldviews and ways of life. They allow ASEAN people to become aware of
cultural similarities as well as differences. Discussions alone cannot promote cultural
understanding. What we need is to continuously take part in artistic and cultural activities
and exchanges to become appreciative of each other’s society and culture. The art
community has been leading such exchanges for many decades. In visual arts, the
countless festivals, biennales, and other collaborative activities have brought together
artists from different parts of Southeast Asian countries. These efforts have taken artistic
practices into a whole new level and resulted in an array of artistic works that stretches
from one corner of Southeast Asia to the other. Governments should play a facilitating role
in this bottom-up process of regional identity-making.
We begin with an awareness that each culture has been influenced by and have
similarities with other cultures. Hybridisation, resulting from borrowing and adoption of
cultural elements of other societies, is a historical fact. Having said these, ASEAN
Member States are still very much culturally diverse. We should pay serious attention to
each other’s cultural differences and specific cultural contexts to preserve national
identities while building regional harmony. We believe that such cultural diversity is not
an obstacle to development. In fact, we believe that cultural diversity is the foundation of
sustainable development. ASEAN Member States’ distinct cultural practices allow each
state to respond to complex sustainable development challenges such as climate change,
migration, rapid population growth, food insecurity, land degradation, war and conflict in
different ways. But our efforts can be complementary and can have spaces for
collaboration. Our diverse cultural expressions can be channelled to create cultural and
creative industries. Everywhere in the world today, cultural economy is on the rise. We
need to invest in culture not only to improve people’s economic welfare, but also to create
a more tolerant and diverse society.
To foster ASEAN identity, we need to make an effort to strengthen our regional
cultural ecosystem. Our regional identity depends on the preservation of the cultural
identities of each ASEAN Member state. Hence, each state must work to nurture its unique
cultural expressions while collaborating with other nations to expand cultural exchanges
and link our cultural and creative industries.

From melting arctic ice caps to forest fires, global warming is heating up the planet and
damaging the Earth's ecosystems. Global warming is the rise of the Earth's temperatures
caused by an increase of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions. Global warming has
increased very much in the past 100 years because people are using more and more
electricity and driving more cars. We are also cutting down more trees that clean the air.
Scientists have been studying the effects of global warming on different ecosystems for
a long time and what they have found is quite worrying. The rising temperatures have
caused many problems in ecosystems. Arctic ice is melting, causing sea levels to rise and
floods in seaside areas. As a result, animals and plants are losing their homes. As oceans
and rivers become warmer, the water temperatures keep changing. Some marine animals
cannot live in these new conditions. Since the 1970s, populations of fish in lakes and
rivers have decreased by 76 percent.
Global warming is also causing extreme weather events. Other ecosystems, like deserts
and grasslands, are experiencing terrible droughts and certain wildlife and plant species
that depend on water are dying. Due to the high temperatures, wildfires are destroying
whole ecosystems such as forests. There has been a serious rise in endangered species in
recent years that could result in many animals becoming extinct. The loss of plants and
animals causes problems for all living things in an ecosystem. We need to take action to
stop global warming and save the Earth's ecosystems before it's too late.

When Google Earth was set up in 2005, satellite technology changed forever the way
we see the world and we all became global tourists. Now anybody can 'visit' anywhere on
Earth- places you never imagined visiting, such as Antarctica and the Sahara [Link]
you need for your virtual world trip is a computer and an Internet connection. But Google
Earth is not just a fun way to explore the world. It can also inform people about
environmental issues such as deforestation, endangered species and climate change. When
Google Earth first appeared, nobody could have imagined that an Amazonian tribe would
use this tool to help them protect their environment and their culture.
The Surui tribe live in the middle of the Amazon rainforest of Brazil. They had not had
any contact with the outside world until 1969. Then illegal loggers started to invade their
land and destroy the forest. Without the forest, the Surui community would not survive
and they knew they had to take action. So they elected Chief Almir as one of the leaders of
the tribe.
Chief Almir first came across Google Earth on a visit to an Internet café. He
immediately realised that he could use the interactive maps to tell people about the illegal
logging that was destroying his people's environment.
The tribal chief wanted to show the effects of deforestation, not only on his local
community, but on a global scale too. He understood that deforestation was destroying
plants and wildlife and causing global warming. He contacted Google and then travelled
from the Amazon rainforest to Google headquarters in California and told them his story.
They discussed ways of working together.
Google sent trainers to teach Surui teenagers how to use mobile phones to create
YouTube videos and then upload them to Google Earth to share their way of life with
people around the world. For five years the Surui tribe and Google worked as a team. They
combined modern technology with the tribe's traditional knowledge of the rainforest.

The Amazon rainforest, often called the "lungs of the Earth," is one of the most
biodiverse areas in the world. However, it is facing severe deforestation due to human
activities. Deforestation in the Amazon has accelerated in recent decades, primarily due to
logging, agriculture, and cattle ranching. Large areas of forest are cleared to create space
for crops and livestock, leading to the destruction of habitats for countless [Link]
impact of deforestation extends beyond just the loss of trees. The Amazon rainforest plays
a critical role in absorbing carbon dioxide, which helps regulate the Earth's climate. When
trees are cut down, they release stored carbon back into the atmosphere, contributing to
global warming. Additionally, deforestation disrupts the water cycle, leading to drier
climates both within the forest and in surrounding areas.
The loss of the Amazon rainforest also has a devastating impact on indigenous
communities. Many indigenous people rely on the forest for their livelihood, food, and
medicine. As deforestation continues, these communities are losing their homes and
resources, forcing them to move or adapt to new environments.
Efforts to combat deforestation are underway, with various organizations working to
promote sustainable practices, reforestation, and legal protections for the Amazon.
However, tackling deforestation requires global cooperation and a shift towards more
sustainable lifestyles to protect this vital ecosystem for future generations.

Global warming may seem like a distant threat, but it affects our daily lives in
surprising ways. While many are aware of the melting polar ice caps and rising sea levels,
fewer people realize how global warming is influencing their immediate surroundings and
lifestyle [Link] of the first impacts of global warming is on weather patterns. In
recent years, summers have become hotter, with record-breaking temperatures being
reported around the world. This increase in heat isn’t just uncomfortable; it’s dangerous.
Extreme heatwaves are more frequent and intense, leading to higher cases of heat-related
illnesses and dehydration. People now have to adapt by installing air conditioning,
increasing their energy use and, ironically, contributing further to global warming.
In addition to weather changes, global warming is influencing the food we eat. Warmer
temperatures affect crop yields, with many staple crops like wheat and rice experiencing
reduced production due to unpredictable weather conditions. As a result, food prices rise,
and food security becomes a pressing issue. Farmers are being forced to use more water
and chemicals to protect their crops, which has additional environmental consequences.
Global warming also impacts wildlife, even in urban areas. Rising temperatures and
habitat loss force animals to move, often bringing them into human spaces. For instance,
as forests dry up, animals like bears and deer wander into towns in search of food and
water, creating unexpected encounters between humans and wildlife.
Ultimately, global warming is much closer to home than we might think. From the food
on our plates to the wildlife in our neighborhoods, the effects of global warming are real
and require immediate action. Each of us has a role in mitigating these changes, whether
by reducing energy consumption, supporting sustainable farming, or spreading awareness
of the everyday impacts of climate change.
