Answer the following questions

Question One (10 Marks)

In a mechanism shown in Fig., the crank OA is 100 mm long and rotates clockwise about O at
120 r.p.m. The connceting rod AB is 400 mm long. At a point C on AB, 150 mm from A, the rod
CE 350 mm long is attached. This rod CE slides in a slot in a trunnion at D. The end E is
connected by a link EF, 300 mm long to the horizontally moving slider F.

For the mechanism in the position shown, find:

1.1 Velocity of F,
1.2 Velocity of sliding of CE in the trunnion, and
1.3. Angular velocity of CE.

Question Two (10 Marks)
For the sewing machine linkage shown in figure, at the instant
when Ɵ = 30, the driver wheel rotates counter-clockwise at
constant speed of 200 rpm.
2.1 Determine the linear velocity of the needle
2.2 The linear acceleration of the needle

Question Three (8 Marks)

The figure shows the skeleton of a shaper machine
composed of five links.
Locate all instantaneous centers of the mechanism:
I13 I24 I15 I46
Use the order of IC shown:

Question Four (12 Marks)

Draw the cam profile for following conditions:

Follower type = knife edged follower, in line; follower rises by 24 mm with SHM
in 1/4 rotation, dwells for 1/8 rotation and then raises again by 24 mm with
uniform acceleration and retardation in 1/4 rotation and dwells for 1/16 rotation
before returning with SHM. Base circle radius = 30 mm.

Solution of Question One

Question One measures ILO: A1, B1

Vao = 120 r.p.m. or ωao = 2 π × 120/60 = 4 π rad/s = 12.56 rad/s

therefore Velocity of A = ωAO × OA = 4 π × 0.1 = 1.26 m/s
The velocity diagram, is shown
Vcd/Vce = CD/CE
Vf = 0.53 m/s Ans. 2.
Velocity of sliding of CE in the trunnion
Since velocity of sliding of CE in the trunnion is the velocity of D, Therefore:
Velocity of sliding of CE in the trunnion = vector od = 1.08 m/s
Angular velocity of CE By measurement, velocity of C with respect to E,VCE =
vector = 0.44 m/s
Angular velocity of CE, ω= 1.26 rad/s (Clockwise about E)

Solution of Question Two
Question Two measures ILO: A3, C2

For the velocity diagram

Va = ω OA = 200 x 2 πx 1.5 /60 = 31.41 cm/s

Assume scale 1:10

Linear velocity of the needle = Vb
From measurement Vb = 24 cm/s
For the acceleration diagram
At point A Aan = (Va)2 /OA = (31.4)2/1.5 = 657.3 cm/s2
For uniform speed : angular acceleration = 0
Aban = (Vab)2 /AB = (2.4)2/3 = 192 cm/s2
Linear acceleration of needle :
Ab = 500 cm/s2
Solution of Question Three
Question Three measures ILO: A1, B1

The figure shows the skeleton of a shaper machine

composed of five links.
Locate all instantaneous centers of the mechanism
Solution of Question Four
Question Four measures ILO: B2
