CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 STUDENT’S INDUSTRY WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a crucial components of

certain degrees and diploma programs at higher education institutions.

The students industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) was established in 1973 by the

Industrial Training Fund to address the issue of inadequate practical skills among graduates

from tertiary institutions thereby enhancing their employability in Nigeria industries. This

initiative was a response to the mandate given to the Industrial Training Fund [ITF] through

decree 47 of 1971, which tasked the organization with promoting and encouraging the

acquisition of skills in indigenous man power sufficient to meet the needs of the economy.

The scheme exposes students to industrial based skills necessary for a smooth transition from

the classroom to the world of work. It affords the students of tertiary institution the

opportunity of being familiar and exposed to the need of experience in handling machinery

and equipment which are usually not available in the educational institutions. The students

industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) is the acceptable skill training program which

forms the minimum academic standards in the various degree programs for Nigeria

universities. It is an effort to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical

application in science, technology and other professional educational programs within

Nigerian tertiary institution.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a program aimed at

providing skill training to students from universities, polytechnics, colleges of technology,

agriculture, and education. Its purpose is to prepare these students for the practical aspects of

industrial work they are likely to encounter upon graduation. Before SIWES was established,

1
industrialists expressed concern that graduates lacked sufficient practical preparation for

employment in industries. Employers felt that the theoretical education provided by higher

institutions did not adequately meet the demands of the labor market. The key stakeholders in

the SIWES program include the ITF, coordinating agencies such as NUC, NCCE, and NBTE,

employers, and educational institutions. Funding for the program is provided by the federal

government of Nigeria, and the beneficiaries are undergraduate students from faculties

including agriculture, engineering, technology, environmental science, education, medical

science, and pure and applied sciences.

1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

Relying solely on theoretical knowledge typically does not adequately prepare individuals

for industrial work. Effective workers must possess not only knowledge but also practical

skills and versatility in applying them to specific tasks. In Nigeria, SIWES is a crucial

component of numerous degree and diploma programs offered by higher learning institutions.

This scheme occurs in external institutions and plays a significant role in manpower

development across the country. Essentially, the aims and objectives of SIWES include:

⮚ To offer students opportunities to gain industrial skills and hands-on experience while

pursuing their studies.

⮚ Prepare students for the practical demands of the industrial workplace they are likely

to encounter post-graduation.

⮚ Introduce students to work methods and techniques for handling equipment and

machinery that may not be accessible within the university environment.

⮚ Give students the chance to apply their academic knowledge in real-world work

settings, thereby closing the gap between theory and practice.

⮚ Facilitate a smoother transition from academic schooling to the professional world by

increasing student exposure and networking opportunities for future job placements.

2
⮚ SIWES also aids students in developing professional work skills and interpersonal

relationships.

⮚ Ensuring that institutions of higher learning produce qualified graduates who are well-

prepared to join the nation's workforce.

⮚ Empowers students to contribute their share to the development of the country.

1.3 RELEVANCE OF THE SIWES

One of the notable characteristics of advanced industrial societies is their progress in science

and technology. This progress has allowed their citizens to enjoy a higher standard of living

compared to developing countries. Consequently, formal education, which includes field or

industrial work, is crucial for producing graduates with increasingly specialized skills.

Therefore, the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is relevant

for:Improvement of science and technology education.

⮚ Skilled manpower development.

⮚ Creation of a community with increased standard of living.

⮚ Development of critical and scientific approach to problems and their solutions.

⮚ New innovations in the field of science and technology.

DESCRIPTON OF THE ESTABLISHMENT

2.1 HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF KENNETH DIKE LIBRARY

2.2 AIMS AND VISION OF THE LIBRARY

The University of Ibadan library is responsible for acquiring, organizing, and providing

accessible, high-quality educational resources (such as books, journals, reports, monographs,

and electronic materials) and effective services to support the teaching, learning, and research

mandates of the institution. To fulfill this responsibility, the University maintains a three-tier

library system with the Kenneth Dike Library (KDL) as the main library and central hub.

Other libraries in the system include the Latunde Odeku Medical Library, located about eight

kilometers away at the College of Medicine, and 26 faculty, departmental, and institute

libraries.

Over the years, the physical collections of these libraries have expanded and continue to do

so, with the current total holdings of learning resources in the system estimated to exceed two

million volumes. These collections include books, journals, dissertations, technical reports,

and monographs, as well as materials of historical significance, such as the Africana

collections.

The University Library employs modern technologies alongside analog resources to provide

hybrid library services that cater to the unique needs and aspirations of its sophisticated

clientele. In addition to its physical collections, the Library subscribes to several electronic

databases and curates various other relevant sources to meet the specific academic needs of

the University, including ProQuest, Research4Life, and Emerald. Access to some of these

databases is controlled by Internet Protocol (IP) address. This means that they can be

4
accessed by logging into the University network while on campus. Outside the campus, users

can access them through login details which the Library provides and moderates.

Also, routine activities and sections of the Library are automated such that the bibliographic

records of the physical collections are held in digital formats and easily retrievable, thereby

ensuring access to the Library resources anytime, anywhere. The University of Ibadan

Integrated Library System (UIILS) is the Library management software deployed for

managing the Library activities. The

Library catalogue can be accessed from the comfort of offices, classrooms and homes

anytime as long as there is internet connectivity.

2.3. TOUR OF THE MAIN LIBRARY (KENNETH DIKE LIBRARY)

The main library has two primary entrances available to readers. For the protection of library

properties, there are two security points within the library. Personal belongings and bags are

not allowed inside the reading area and should be deposited in the designated safe-keeping

area in the Cloak Room. It is important to note that bags and other valuable items are kept at

the owner's risk.

CHAPTER FIVE

5.1 SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES PERFORMED

The six-month industrial training was really worth [Link] this period ,the theory and

practice of librarianship was married together and the experience was really worth [Link]

summary of the activities are going to be discussed in the various divisions I was posted to:

In the technical services division,I had the opportunity of receiving books from the collection

development unit, cataloging and classifying [Link] the first time,I personally used the

much taught about AACR2,Subject Headings and schedules.I saw the Cutter Table and used

it correctly.I did book finishing and handed books to the circulation unit for shelving.

In the bindery unit,I was taught how to bind books, using of needle and thread ,using of mull

and glue at the spin, printing on the cover involves writing at title and name of the book on

the cover of the book that has been prepared by using foil that comes in different color e.g
27
gold, silver e.t.c.I inserted the book into the cover after applying glue,it will be taken to the

presser machine for it to look firm and dry before it’s been transferred to the shelf.

In the collection development division, the experience was really worth it,I was exposed to the

various units of the building the information resources of a library system.I worked with

multi-purpose slip and many selection tools which only theory would not have exposed me

to.

The experienced gathered in the serial division is a nice one,I also did stamping on

newspapers and helping users to find information material quickly.

The reader’s services division is another section I really learnt a lot, here I understood that

any staff in this division must be jovial, welcoming, friendly and acquire the skills and the

characteristics of a public relations officer(PRO).This is because ,the division is the image

maker of the library.

The E-library division is another section that has proved to me that a paperless society where

information can be accessed anywhere in the world is [Link] I learnt how to make use

of online database e.g DOAB,AJOL,Research4life e.t.c.

5.2 CONCLUSION

The opportunity given by the ITF and SIWES unit of the university to acquire this knowledge

in any field of study has been advantage to me in all areas . I can categorically say I would

not have venture into librarianship at all if I did not find out ways to carry out librarianship

practices and skill such as cataloguing, classification, acquisition of book process, shelving

and shelve-reading ,how to create index etc

28
My work ethics leadership skills, communication skills and social skills has also been

improved by interacting and working with expert who have in the labour market for several

years

Finally, I’ve been able to put to good use most of the theoretical aspect of my field of study

by applying them practically.

5.3 RECOMMENDATION FOR KDL UI

Incoming and outgoing register for staff be taken serious to enhance punctuality of staff

Power supply: for lighting especially to avoid dark reading room the NEPA, inverter , cannot

only do the lighting due to disrupt and instability. Solar procurement to be looked into.

Theft and stealing of library materials : i) chips are to be put inside the old books not only the

newly purchased books only because some books maybe stolen if not well secured . ii) Porter

are not really or not sufficient , capable to avoid stealing of library resources if a librarian is

with them who can know all about book entitled to the library , that minimize hazard stealing

of library resources
