The word ‘harmony’ denotes a state of peaceful co-
existence, that comes with mutual benefit. ‘Harmony’
comprehensively sums up what enabled humanity to
grow and develop from a group of cavemen, into what
it is today. It assumes special importance even in
today’s era, where people of different ethnic
backgrounds are woven into the fabric of society. In
today’s society, defined by a multicultural ethos, the
need for harmony through peaceful co-existence and
tolerance has never been greater, especially in the
advent of rising sectarianism, hate crimes and other
forms in which discord and enmity manifest
themselves, which unfortunately, is also being
demonstrated in our country itself. We must remember
that harmony in society, is imperative to ensuring its
continued growth and progress, while ill-will and
animosity between sections of society only regress our
collective progress towards developing society as a
whole. We too, as the citizens of the future, bear upon
us a collective responsibility towards ensuring, like our
First Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said,
“Unity in Diversity” in our country, spreading the
message of harmony and tolerance far and wide.
Quoting the wise words of the Dalai Lama, “Because
we all share this planet Earth, we have to learn to live
in harmony and peace with each other”
