academic skills, social-emotional functioning, and mental-behavioural health of all
students—the Asia Pacific School Psychology Association (APSPA) under the International
presidency of Prof. Panch. Ramalingam held the 1st International Conference at the National
Institute of Education, Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2020, the 2nd International Conference at
AIMST University, Malaysia, in 2021, and the 3rd International Conference at the

The Conference Theme

AI and the Future of School Psychology and Education

The nature, scope, and thrust of AI en-

compass a broad range of concepts: AI
refers to systems or machines that
simulate human intelligence to per-
form tasks and can improve over time
through learning. AI can be catego-
rized into Narrow AI: Specialized in
a specific task (e.g., voice assistants,
recommendation systems), and Gen-
eral AI: Hypothetical systems that
possess the ability to understand,
learn, and apply intelligence across a
wide range of tasks.
AI is used in various fields including Healthcare: Diagnostics, personalized medicine, and
robotic surgeries, Finance: Fraud detection, trading algorithms, and customer service,
Transportation: Autonomous vehicles and traffic management systems, Manufacturing:
Predictive maintenance, quality control, and automation, Entertainment: Content crea-
tion, game design, and personalized recommendations, and Research Areas: AI encom-
passes machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and more.
AI is rapidly evolving, and its potential continues to expand across various domains. AI is
poised to impact school psychology and education significantly in various ways. Here are
some key areas where AI can play a role:
Personalized Learning: AI can analyze students' learning patterns and preferences, ena-
bling tailored educational experiences. This personalization can help educators identify
strengths and weaknesses, allowing for targeted interventions.
Data-Driven Decision Making: School psychologists can leverage AI to analyze large sets
of student data, identifying trends and areas needing attention. This can lead to more in-
formed decisions regarding mental health resources and educational strategies.
Early Intervention: AI can help identify at-risk students by recognizing patterns in behav-
iour or academic performance. Early detection can prompt timely interventions, potentially
improving outcomes.
Support for Mental Health: AI-driven tools, such as chatbots or virtual counsellors, can
provide immediate support for students dealing with anxiety or stress. These tools can offer
resources and coping strategies and even facilitate connections to human professionals when
needed.
Professional Development: AI can assist educators and school psychologists in their on-
going training by recommending resources and strategies based on their needs and challeng-
es.
Enhanced Collaboration: AI platforms can facilitate communication between educators,
psychologists, and parents, ensuring a more cohesive approach to student support.
Streamlining Administrative Tasks: AI can automate routine tasks, such as scheduling
meetings or managing paperwork, allowing school psychologists to focus more on direct stu-
dent support.
Challenges and Considerations: While the potential benefits are substantial, there are
challenges to consider, including:
• Data Privacy: Protecting student information is crucial, and AI systems must ad-
here to strict privacy standards.
• Equity: Ensuring all students have access to AI tools and resources is essential to
prevent widening the achievement gap.
• Training: Educators and psychologists will need training to use AI tools and effec-
tively interpret the data they generate.
The integration of AI into school psychology and education has the potential to enhance
learning and mental health support significantly. However, careful consideration and im-
plementation are vital to maximize benefits while addressing ethical concerns.

Today, many priorities for applying Artificial Intelligence in School Psychology and
Educational advancements, but still need to be met. The psychologists and educators seek
technology-enhanced approaches that address these priorities safely, effectively, and
scalable. The educators visualize whether the rapid technological advances in everyday life
could help. Like all of us, school psychologists and educators use AI-powered services in
their everyday lives, such as voice assistants in their homes, tools that can correct grammar,
complete sentences, write essays, and automated trip planning on their phones.
Objectives
• To understand the nature, scope and thrust areas of AI to apply in School Psychology
• To understand the application of AI in School Psychology and Education
• To discuss the strategies that are to be adopted in ensuring AI are understood in the
right perspective and shared with the society.
• To study the implications of AI in the field of school psychology policies vis-à-vis
Teacher Educators.
• To design strategies –with the participation of teachers and communities– that can
improve curricular relevance and ensure that educators are equipped with the skills
required to user in AI transformations.

Sub Themes
In consonance with the theme, the subthemes include :
• Understanding AI to apply in School Psychology
• Impact on the Psychologists routine
• Usage of Technology by the Psychologists/Counsellors/Teacher Educators for adopt-
ing the teaching of AI
• Impact on Education policy in the Asia Pacific Region
• Quality concerns on the delivery of teachers and the methods
